DESCRIPTION OF WORK:
This position is being re-posted.  Previous applicants do not need to reapply.  Position is responsible for overall administration and management of the Education Branch at Tryon Palace including budgets. Leads and assists in development, research, planning and production of all interpretive programs, tours and events and ensures that they support the overall mission appropriately and accurately.  Responsible for managing all activities related to the development, implementation, and evaluation of special interpretive and educational events and programs.  This position participates in the creation and execution of special events and public programs to expand audience and increase admission. The Director of Education acts as the liaison to other historical societies, foundations and various agencies within the Dept. of Cultural Resources.  Oversees, negotiates and schedules third party programs, lectures and events. Directly supervises and evaluates work of 5 professional staff and indirectly supervises 5 additional professional positions as well as temporary employees and volunteer staff. This position requires the ability to work occasional evenings, weekends & holidays.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES / COMPETENCIES:
In-depth knowledge of 18th and 19th century American & North Carolina History; extensive experience in history museum education programs (both children and adults) required; requires knowledge of educational methods and approaches and knowledge of professional museum standards; excellent communication, organizational, research and interpersonal skills required.  Ability to plan, monitor and balance budgets; ability to work with diverse audiences and manage and motivate employees; ability to  develop and maintain effective interpretive programs; ability to speak effectively  in public and express ideas clearly orally and in writing; ability to organize and synthesize  information; work independently and draw conclusions based on research data.  Strong computer skills are required; history education teaching experience and and interest in informal education preferred.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
A master’s degree in museum studies, education, history, public history, architectural history, design or specific content area or field of expertise and one year of experience in museum or related work or an equivalent combination of training and experience.Management prefers a Master’s degree in History, American Studies, Museum Studies or History Education. A minimum of five years’ experience in museum or related cultural institution work including three years in a supervisory or managerial capacity; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Management prefers at least five years of progressively responsible work as a professional museum educator at an accredited museum with a background in colonial & NC history. Degrees must be from appropriately accredited institutions.
