The Associate Curator for Exhibitions and Collections is a key member of the curatorial team, reporting directly to, and working with, the Robyn & John Davis Chief Curator (or, during a leave of absence of the Chief Curator, to the Associate Director/Executive Director). The Associate Curator will manage the development and implementation of annual changing exhibitions working with the entire curatorial team, especially the Obed Macy Research Chair and the Curatorial and Library Associate. The Associate Curator is charged with delivering the season’s exhibitions in the major changing exhibition spaces, especially the Peter Foulger Gallery at the Whaling Museum. The Associate Curator also plays a role in the management, research and interpretation of the NHA collections in the fine and decorative arts, historic and prehistoric artifacts, historic structures, and archival holdings. The Associate Curator will supervise one FTP, the Collections and Systems Manager. The position is full time and exempt.

Duties and Responsibilities:

 

Plan, develop, and implement annual changing exhibitions in the Peter Foulger Gallery, and other venues.

 

Participate in the Interpretive Planning Group’s development of interpretation for exhibitions, historic sites, and museum spaces.

 

Coordinate exhibitions and collections offerings with public programs, visitor experience, and the interpretive staff.

 

Supervise the Collections and Systems manager.

 

Support the department in the preparation of collections-based publications;

 

Participate in public programs and offerings of the NHA that promote our exhibitions, collections and content;

 

Liaise with the Visitor Experience department on communications and promotion relating to exhibitions and collections.

 

Provide a professional, customer-friendly face for the NHA and its collections to the public;

 

Respond to public inquiries about the collections and exhibition programs of the NHA.

 

Act as lead departmental representative for exhibitions in cases when the chief curator is away for lengthier periods (eg. leave of absence.).
