Interpretive Planner

 

Purpose
The Interpretive Planner works collaboratively to develop multi-experiential free-choice learning opportunities within the galleries and grounds of The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. The Interpretive Planner will work as part of a cross-museum team on small, short term projects and larger, multi-year projects and will develop, implement, and facilitate the evaluations of new and established engagement strategies.

 

Accountabilities

 

Strategic Planning/Development
Develops and implements traditional and experimental interpretive strategies that communicate concepts through museum exhibits and other media to engage museum visitors.

 

Evaluation
Analyzes the impact and success of interpretive strategies and applies learning to new and existing strategies.

 

Visitor Engagement
Works collaboratively with Curatorial and Design departments to ensure the best visitor experience in the permanent collection galleries and featured exhibitions. Produces diverse communication that meets audience’s needs.

 

Interpretive Planning
Creates and develops interpretive plans for the permanent collection and featured exhibitions

 

Research
Researches interpretive techniques; stays aware of the latest research in the field and experiments in interpretation.

 

Administrative Support
Twenty percent of the work of the Interpretive Planner will be administrative in support of the Interpretation Department.

 

Position Requirements

 

  • Masters level education in Visual Arts, Museum Studies, Education, Arts or Art History, Philosophy, or other related field.
  • Minimum one year of experience in a museum setting working in education, curatorial, or other related areas.
  • Well-developed short-term and long term planning and time management skills with a clear understanding of priorities and adherence to deadlines.
  • Demonstrated experience of successful team work to develop and execute collaborative projects.
  • Demonstrated experience with current museological and educational theories and practice.
  • Well-developed writing and communication skills that demonstrate the ability to leverage multiple vehicles to provide engaging experiences for broad audiences.
  • Demonstrated content analysis and problem solving skills; ability to integrate diverse exhibit elements into a consistent whole; knowledge of museum audiences; knowledge of strengths and weaknesses of a variety of interpretive techniques; ability to collaborate with a diverse group of people.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Sustained periods of mental and visual concentration.
  • Manages multiple priorities simultaneously.
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines.
Physical Requirements
While performing the duties of this job, the incumbent is occasionally required to sit; use hands; reach with hands and arms; Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color visions, peripheral vision, and depth perception. Moderate walking and standing for interval periods of time.
