Description

1)    Purpose:  The Evaluation Manager leads all aspects of Pacific Science Center’s evaluation program. Pacific Science Center is committed to comprehensive and meaningful assessment of the Science Center’s impact on its audience and the effectiveness of its education programs and exhibits.
2)    Summary: Manage all activities related to the evaluation and assessment of Pacific Science Center’s audience, education programs and exhibits including methodology development, data collection and analysis and dissemination of reports to audiences and stakeholders.

b)    Positions reporting to this position:  Evaluator and evaluation interns

c)     Peers:  Database Manager, Membership Manager, Discovery Circle Manager, Development Researcher, Corporate and Foundation Relations Manager, PoP Project Manager, PoP Program Manager, Current Science Project Manager,Discovery Corps and SIP Manager, Manager of Exhibit Development.

d)    Positions incumbent interfaces with inside and outside organization:  Vice Presidents, program managers, external program partners, supervisors and external evaluators

4)    Key Job Responsibilities:

a)     Research and Information Gathering:

i.    Designs, implements and oversees evaluation process.

ii.    Designs front-end, formative, remedial and summative evaluation plans and tools for assessing education programs and exhibits.

iii.    Works with IRB Review Boards.

iv.    Compiles evaluation findings, interprets data and completes reports.

b)   Manages Staff and Volunteers:

i.     Recruits, hires and manages the work of evaluator, evaluation interns and volunteer data collectors.

      c)    Collaborates with Staff:

i.      Works with Senior Leadership Team and project managers to determine evaluation needs and develop instruments.

ii.      Works with project managers to forecast evaluation budgets and manages budgets throughout project   implementation.

iii.   Works with project managers to train staff in evaluation protocols and data collection.

iv.   Works with members of Foundation Relations team to develop new grant proposals and prepare funder reports.

d)   Communication:

i.      Manages relationship with, and performance of, external program evaluators.

ii.    Prepares written materials in support of fundraising efforts including research, project goals and evaluation components.

iii.    Communicates research findings both internally and externally, including written and oral evaluation for staff and funders.

e)   Other duties as assigned including alternative service.

5)    Major Challenges and Special Conditions:

  1. Ability to work under multiple deadlines.
  2. Ability to coordinate information gathered from staff from all PSC divisions.
  3. Ability to work with external evaluators.
  4. Available to work occasional weekend, holiday and evening hours outside of regular work schedule as needed.
6)    Position Requirements: Knowledge, Education, Skills, Experience, Abilities
a.    Required –

i.      Master’s Degree, preferably in museum studies or education.

ii.      Minimum of five years in evaluation of education programs, exhibits, survey research or related field

iii.      Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.

iv.      Strong project management skills with ability to successfully manage several large initiatives simultaneously.

v.      Ability to work well with staff, visitors, and partners in professional, education, and evaluation settings.

vi.      Strong organizational, analytical, and problem solving skills.

vii.      Proven ability to work independently and as part of a team on multiple, simultaneous, diverse projects.

viii.      Demonstrated ability to meet tight deadlines.

ix.      Advanced knowledge of experimental design, data collection methods and analysis.

x.      Proficiency with statistical applications, electronic database collection tools and database management (e.g. SPSS).

xi.      Strong understanding of audience research and learning in a museum setting.

xii.      High level of energy and enthusiasm, positive attitude, service-oriented.

xiii.      Ability to interact respectfully with supervisors, fellow employees volunteers and science center visitors.

b.  Preferred – Experience with evaluation and assessment in a museum or other informal science education setting.

c.                     Desired – PhD in research and evaluation methodology, social science or education.
