The Walters Art Museum seeks an energetic and creative individual to work in the Education’s Division to manage the family and community programs.   Reporting to the Deputy Director for Audience Engagement Programs, the incumbent will be responsible for attracting, cultivating and sustaining family and community audiences at the museum by creating, implementing, overseeing and evaluating a wide range of educational programming and interpretation for family and community audiences.

Responsibilities:

  • Presenting current programs, projects, and interpretive efforts to the Deputy Director for Audience Engagement and other senior staff as required, in order to advocate the value and importance of Family and Community Programs.
  • Keeping abreast of, and applies, current trends in museum education, early education,  technology, community programs, and out of school time programs in order to align all informal museum programs and resources with local and national educational priorities and best practices.
  • Providing input and vision for the Deputy Director for Audience Engagement by helping to establish long range goals in order to align goals with the Walters’ strategic plan and mission.
  • Supervising staff in order to provide leadership and direction by overseeing all aspects of programs, projects and interpretation related to family learning in the galleries, studios and community outreach off sites; hires, trains, assesses and mentors staff to provide adequate staffing and coordination of programs.
  • Developing and overseeing annual budgets and attendance projects by monitoring quarterly income, expenditures and attendance statistics.
  • Serving as Educator of Record on exhibition teams in order to ensure that all special exhibitions are audience-centered, engaging and accessible.
  •  Ensuring all departmental programs, projects, and interpretive material are evaluated in order to ensure quality, age appropriate programs for children, families and members of the community; disseminating information on current and community programming and interpretation to the museum and education field in order to maintain the Walters’ leadership position in museum education, early education, art education, technology, community and out of school time programs.
  • Overseeing physical and web-based interpretive materials and resources for families with children in order to provide accessible, engaging and educational connects to works of art in the museum’s permanent collection and special exhibitions;  overseeing all aspects of early childhood learning at the museum in order to provide quality, age-appropriate early childhood experiences with art for young children and their caregivers.
  • Collaborating with the Development Division and the Deputy Director for Audience Engagement in order to identify funding opportunities to support the Family and Community Programs.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • MA degree in Fine Arts, Art Education, Museum Education or Art History, Museum Education, minimum of 3 years demonstrated experience creating, managing and implementing art and/or educational programs in a museum setting.  Demonstrated experience in early childhood education, gallery teaching and managing and mentoring staff.
  • Knowledgeable of education pedagogy required with an understanding of the stages of human development and the application of learning theories to art museum education.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including grant writing, lesson writing and planning.  Studio art skills, including experience and skills in teaching a variety of techniques to varying ages.  Strong customer service and organizational skills.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Suite programs, as well as website content management systems.
  • Enthusiastic desire and ability to work with children of all ages and family groups.  Ability to interact effectively and collaborate with diverse museum audiences and personnel; able to think creatively to inform and inspire museum audiences.
  • Able to tour groups in museum galleries and communicate to visitors.  Must be able to stand for long periods of time.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours to include some evenings and weekends.
