The Hammer seeks an exceptional candidate for an eighteen-month curatorial fellowship for the research and development of an upcoming exhibition focused on the work of Latin American women artists during the period 1960-1980. The position will begin in November 2013.

Reporting to the Chief Curator, the Fellow will work primarily under the direction of the lead Guest Curator, with guidance from a guest co-curator and an outside Curatorial Advisory Committee. The Fellow will assist the guest curators in researching and establishing the full exhibition histories and chronology of the Latin American women artists who are the subject of the exhibition, as well as tracing individual works of art. The Fellow will make travel arrangements for guest curators’ research travel and meetings; organize and maintain exhibition and artist files; correspond with artists, lenders, and institutions; maintain, update, and circulate the exhibition checklist, including entering information into the museum’s TMS database system; working with guest curators and museum registration staff to generate and follow up on loan requests; and working with guest curators and museum publications staff to collect images for web site and catalogue, among other duties.

Additionally, the Fellow will coordinate all aspects of the Curatorial Advisory Committee, including organizing and attending meetings, recording minutes, and making travel arrangements for Committee participants. The Fellow will be the primary liaison between Hammer staff and the guest curators and advisory committee.

The Fellow may also assist in guided research related to potential acquisition to the Hammer Contemporary Collection of Latin American art, with an emphasis on work by women artists.

Major administrative duties in support of all of the responsibilities outlined above include preparing regular progress reports; maintaining files; coordinating logistics; managing and tracking budgets with other Hammer staff; and other duties as assigned to ensure the project’s successful development.

Requirements include knowledge of museum operations, standards, practices, and procedures; demonstrated office management and administrative coordination experience; and excellent oral and written communication skills. Incumbent must also be highly organized, efficient, and attentive to detail, with excellent follow-up skills; self-starting, resourceful, proactive, and motivated in performing and excelling in responsibilities; able to prioritize and adjust to a heavy workload, manage a variety of tasks, and meet various deadlines; skilled in planning and coordinating meetings and events; and able to work occasional weekends and evening hours. Technical requirements: Skill in using PC and knowledge of MS Office, including Word, Access, Outlook and Excel, and familiarity with Adobe Photoshop and Acrobat software and database systems. The Hammer will consider doctoral and post-doctoral candidates in art history and related fields with a thorough grounding in art historical research and methodology. Expertise in late 20th-Century Latin American art and culture is highly desirable. Candidate must be able to communicate well orally and in writing in both English and Spanish. Reading knowledge of Spanish is also highly desirable.
