The Curator and Arts Coordinator will oversee the arts program at the Women’s Studies Research Center, which houses the only feminist gallery in New England, including developing exhibitions for the Kniznick Gallery, creating educational programs to enhance exhibitions, and managing the WSRC’s permanent art collection. The Curator and Arts Coordinator will develop and execute exhibitions and programs that engage the entire Brandeis community and the public.

Examples of Key Responsibilities:

Oversees the Visual Arts Program at the Women’s Studies Research Center, including:

  • Advise the Director on overall strategy for arts development
  • researching, planning, and executing several professional exhibitions annually for the Kniznick Gallery, including selection of work, exhibition design, and installation
  • Oversee design and production of publicity materials, catalogs, exhibition text, and other printed materials, working with Brandeis Communications department or contract designers, as needed
  • Work with Exhibitions Committee comprised of WSRC scholars and board members, who serve to connect the arts program to the work of the scholars

Develop and implement educational programming for the Brandeis community and the public, linking exhibition themes to the scholarly research at the WSRC and to the university’s curriculum and mission:

  • Reach out to faculty to link exhibitions to specific courses and academic programs and to encourage use of the gallery as a teaching space
  • Lead tours of exhibitions for various groups, from BOLLI members to community groups to school-age summer campers
  • Work with scholars to integrate their research and talents into exhibitions through programs, writing, and performances

Act as liaison between the WSRC and the larger Brandeis arts community:

  • Connect with Office of the Arts, academic departments, Rose Art Museum, student clubs, and other campus groups to promote WSRC Arts Program and find ways to collaborate on inter-disciplinary and inter-departmental programming
  • Serve on Leonard Bernstein Festival of the Arts Planning Committee

Manage WSRC permanent art collection:

  • Maintain and ensure safety of collection objects on display in the WSRC and in other on-campus locations
  • Oversee acquisition or deaccession of art work to/from the collection

Qualifications:

This position requires creative thinking and an ability to form productive relationships with a wide range of constituencies, including staff, scholars, volunteers, students, board members, and donors.

Two years of curatorial or exhibition design experience is required, as well as solid program design or event planning experience. Must demonstrate strong communication, research, writing, presentation and project management skills.

Marketing and public relations experience is a plus. Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office tools is necessary. Graphic design experience is desirable.
