The Minnesota Historical Society (MNHS) seeks applicants for the position of Program Specialist, Education
Outreach, to further the Society’s strategic goal of connecting MHS to K-12 students and teachers, along with
serving as a voice for the education programs and initiatives both internal and external, and communicating with a
variety of audiences about educational opportunities through MHS and professional organizations. This position
functions in two primary areas: development of high-quality, engaging curriculum; and serving the contract for
service with the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE). This is a full-time, project (2,088 annual hours)
position located at the History Center in St. Paul, MN working through June 30, 2015. Renewal dependent upon
available funding and program need.

SUMMARY OF WORK: Responsibilities include: 1) provide primary support for the contract for service
between the MDE and Minnesota Historical Society; 2) research and develop curricular resources that address state
standards; 3) actively represent MHS in professional organizations, advisory boards, and other forums in order to
keep the Society informed on educational best practices relating to K-12 education; 4) survey existing MHS
curriculum and museum education resources and make recommendations as to the most effective way to revitalize
and repurpose materials for classroom use; and 5) work individually and in collaboration with colleagues to
administer teacher education programs with respect to budgeting, marketing, processing registrations, order
fulfillment, and financial tracking.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
 Bachelor’s degree in business, education, or humanities discipline or related field plus five years experience
working in education, curriculum development, or sales to K-12 audience OR an advanced degree plus three
years program experience or equivalent.
 Familiarity with the teacher and student components of current MHS curriculum, including Northern Lights.
 Familiarity with standards-based education and developing materials and programs that address K-12 academic
standards.
 Demonstrated ability to develop pedagogical strategies that incorporate primary sources.
 Demonstrated ability to write and edit engaging copy for students and teachers.
 Computer skills necessary to develop quality materials and activities.
 Ability and willingness to travel.
 Strong written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills, in particular with K-12 audience.
 Knowledge of K-12 teaching practices and types of curriculum used by K-12 teachers and students.
 Familiarity with educational standards and the structure of education delivery in Minnesota.
 Experience in classroom teaching in upper elementary, middle, or high school levels.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
 General knowledge of Minnesota and United States history.

SALARY: $3,484.00 monthly minimum
