Job Description

COLLECTIONS ARCHIVIST, MIT Libraries, to ensure the acquisition, management, description, and access to archival collections and participate in activities of the records management program. Will work with staff in defining best practices related to archival content management, in analog and digital form; contact offices, faculty, and staff regarding archival content of enduring historical value; participate in donor solicitation; and act as liaison for issues regarding archival collection development and management. Responsibilities include managing transfer of archival collections; accessioning and preparing collections utilizing Archivists’ Toolkit; developing and documenting procedures and creating web content and manuals; participating in accessioning/ingesting born‐digital content; serving as contact for the outsourced temporary‐records storage program; staffing the Archives’ reference desk; assisting with outreach efforts; and participating in committees and projects.

Job Requirements

REQUIRED: ALA‐MLS /MLIS or master’s in history or relevant subject/field; one-year of professional experience acquiring and managing archival material in an archives or library; demonstrated knowledge of archival and records management theory and practice including issues related to intellectual property, ethics, content management, preservation, and access; excellent interpersonal skills; ability to collaborate, work successfully with a diverse population, and exercise diplomacy and tact; strong writing, documentation, organizational, and analytical skills; proven success independently prioritizing work and managing competing deadlines; supervisory experience or demonstrated potential to be an effective supervisor; and ability to lift and move 40 lb. boxes. Experience with an archival content management system and technologies applicable to the archival environment; records management and electronic records issues; descriptive metadata standards including MARC, DACS, and Dublin Core; and EAD data structure standard required.
