POSITION DESCRIPTION:
SFO Museum (SFOM) is a cultural program within the Airport, and it is the only museum at an airport that is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums. Its mission is to provide a broad range of quality museum exhibitions and new museum programs for the traveling public, to humanize the Airport, and to create an ambiance in the Airport that reflects the sophistication, education, learning creativity and cultural diversity of the City and County of San Francisco and the entire Bay Area.

Under administrative direction from the Director and Chief Curator, the Assistant Director of Aviation, Registration and Special Projects provides general management functions for the San Francisco Airport Commission Aviation Library and Louis A. Turpen Aviation Museum (AML), SFO Museum Registration unit, and Museum Special Projects unit.  This position assumes direct responsibility of overseeing, directing, making decisions which impact the daily operation and management of the AML, Registration unit, and the Special Projects unit; evaluating and implementing its established aviation library and museum registration and special projects procedures and policies.  This position directs the research, development, organization and production of approximately 10 high quality exhibitions annually on airport and aviation history in both the Aviation Museum and in the Terminal galleries; establishes partnerships with airlines and relationships with the aeronautical collecting community as well as aviation related institutions, in developing and managing aviation collections.  This position also plans, directs, and manages the registration and collection management activities for the SFO Museum’s permanent collections, donations, purchases, and objects on loan.  This includes the responsibility for insuring of all objects on loan and shipping to and from lenders.   In addition, this position oversees the function of SFO Museum’s special projects unit including managing the online collection database up-to-date; deaccessioning and accessioning museums projects; meeting and exceeding the standards set by American Alliance of Museum (AAM).   With the accelerated planning of the Airport’s Domestic Terminals Master Plan, this position provides critical expertise in directing the research, preparation, development, organization and production of high quality aviation exhibits for the new Terminal galleries to the Director and Chief Curator, and Assistant Director of Exhibitions; provides consultation services to the Director and Chief Curator on SFO Museum’s five-year strategic plan.  The Assistant Director of Aviation, Registration and Special Projects may function as the Museums Director and assumes responsibility of all functions and activities of SFO Museum in absence of the Director and Chief Curator.  This position is a member of the SFO Museum Senior Staff, the Collections Review Committee and the Operational Scheduling Committee.

 

1. EDUCATION:  Possession of a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited College or University. AND
2. EXPERIENCE: Ten (10) years of Museum and/ or Public Art experience, including minimum 5 years supervisory experience.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
The stated desirable qualifications may be used to identify job finalists at the end of the selection process when candidates are referred for hiring.

* Knowledge of aviation history.
* Knowledge of Aesthetic standards and American Alliance of Museums (AAM) standards.
* Over 5 years of supervisory experience in Museum and/ or Public Art.
