The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, one of the country’s leading art museums, is seeking a highly motivated Registrar to join its collections management team.

Museum Collections

The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art is recognized as one of the world’s finest encyclopedic art museums, with collections encompassing more than 33,500 art objects, including masterpieces from diverse world cultures spanning 5,000 years of history. Well known for the arts of China and also Japan, South and Southeast Asia, the museum also holds significant European art, American art, American Indian art, African art and a magnificent photography collection. In addition, the Nelson-Atkins boasts strong modern and contemporary collections with a major emphasis on sculpture that supports the Donald J. Hall Sculpture Park, which includes over 30 monumental works. The encyclopedic collection represents a pinnacle of artistic achievement and serves as evidence of humankind’s history, religions, philosophies, aspirations, and daily lives.

It is an exciting time at the Nelson-Atkins with expanded activities in collection exhibitions and acquisitions.  The registration department provides an essential role in the success of each installation, exhibition and loan to/from the museum. Duties will depend on the experience and capabilities of the incumbent.

Basic Function

Reporting to the Chief Registrar, the Associate Registrar provides support to the department by helping to implement the Museum’s collections management policies and procedures with responsibilities pertaining to acquisitions, collection inventories and temporary exhibitions.

Accountabilities

  • Acquisitions: facilitates new acquisitions in coordination with curatorial by generating Deeds of Gift; corresponds with donors; arranges packing/shipping; creates and maintains object files and records in TMS; issues receipts.
  • NAMA-organized exhibitions: creates budgets; negotiates loans in consultation with the curators of the project; secures loan agreements; issues certificates of insurance; maintains exhibition database in Access (when used); creates/updates records in TMS; makes packing/shipping arrangements; receives deliveries and releases shipments; coordinates packing/unpacking with preparators and conservators; records packing notes and completes incoming condition examinations; issues receipts; and when applicable for traveling exhibitions, requests facility reports from potential venues and compiles completed condition reports and general exhibition information and sends to venues.
  • Exhibitions organized by other institutions: coordinates shipping arrangements with organizers; receives deliveries and releases shipments; coordinates unpacking/packing with preparators and conservators; completes condition reports.
  • Administrative: creates/updates TMS and paper files; records essential information in object files as Registration is the primary depository for information on works in the collection; keeps project files organized; process invoices.
  • Courier duties: serve as courier for loans as needed (involves both ground and air travel)
  • Other: completes all other duties as assigned or requested for the general support of the Museum.
