Position Title: Manager of Science Education, Brooklyn Children’s Museum

Position Description: Brooklyn Children’s Museum is seeking to hire a full-time Manager of Science Education to lead science initiatives for the Museum. As part of a team of education managers, the Manager of Science Education will collaborate on shaping programs for school, afterschool, and the general public., This individual will supervise a staff of science educators and live-animal maintainers; develop, implement, and evaluate programs; and have overall responsibility for the Museum’s natural science areas.

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:Serve as an active member of the science education team and larger Brooklyn Children’s Museum education staff to plan, deliver, and evaluate inquiry-based programs that serve school groups, families, and after school students.;Plan programs that utilize the Live Animal Collection, Greenhouse and Garden, permanent and visiting science exhibits, and the Natural History Collection of approximately 17,000 specimens.; Help develop programs for science-themed special events and festivals, community outreach events, school partnerships, and professional development workshops.;Recruit, train, mentor and evaluate the team of Science Educators, Animal Maintainers and interns.; Supervise staff in caring for the Museum’s live collection of reptiles, amphibians, aquaria, invertebrates and birds; supervise the Live Animal Coordinator’s maintenance of records, permits, licenses, equipment and supplies; ensure appropriate training of all education staff in handling and presentation of animals to the public.; Supervise horticulture in the Con Edison Greenhouse and Garden, including plant acquisition, propagation, and pest control, and the design of seasonal plantings, themed beds, and interpretive signage; recruit and train Garden Docent volunteers.; Collaborate with the Exhibits and Collections departments to design, prototype, and evaluate new science exhibits and improve the Museum’s permanent science exhibits.; Prepare, track and maintain budgets for living collections and science programs.; Participate in relevant professional activities; maintain awareness of current and best practices pertaining to science education, live animal collections, and horticulture.; Establish and maintain community partnerships; represent BCM in the media and at other professional events as needed.; Participate in science grant proposal development, implementation and reporting.;Serve as an active member of the team of Education Managers.; Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: BS, MS preferred, in science or in education with strong science experience; prior work in a museum setting is preferable.; Demonstrated ability to work with children, including children under 6.; Demonstrated supervisory experience and excellent communication skills.; Ability to work weekends, evenings and holidays as needed.; Experience with horticulture and/or live animal husbandry strongly preferred.

Salary: $40,000-45,000 depending on experience
