Description:

We are seeking a high-energy, flexible, resourceful, and collaborative person to serve as curator for the department of Art Collections and Exhibitions on the Dearborn campus. This person will advance the department’s educational mission, managing the University’s art collection, the Berkowitz Gallery, and all of the Gallery’s operations and activities. Established in 1997 in honor of Alfred Berkowitz, the Gallery is a showcase for his extensive glass collection and the growing glass holdings that include works by contemporary studio glass artists as well as period and antique art glass. The Gallery also houses the University’s permanent collections of paperweights, drawings, paintings, prints, photographs, sculptures, and decorative arts. The Berkowitz Gallery has an exhibition space of 2,500 sq. ft. and 200 linear feet for hanging art; four to five exhibitions are typically programmed each year. The position is a primary faculty (non-tenure track) position and reports to the Associate Director, Mardigian Library.

The Curator will be responsible to:

– Develop programs of exhibitions in collaboration with campus and community partners specifically directed toward making the gallery a vital component of the UM-Dearborn experience.
– Develop and document policies, standards, and procedures for exhibitions and events within the gallery.
– Manage the acquisition, documentation, registration, storage, preservation, and display of collections, across campus and within the gallery.
– Negotiate incoming and outgoing loan agreements.
– Manage gallery personnel and budget.
– Write and speak about the collection in scholarly and public venues; produce appropriate online and printed materials to market the gallery and to support virtual and physical exhibitions.
– Forge strong relationships with UM-Dearborn faculty and champion integration of the collection and gallery in teaching and research; may partner with instructional faculty in teaching courses and writing publications; supervises student internship experiences.
– Take an active role in fund raising activities for the gallery, including stewardship, donor development, and grant writing.
– Establish an outreach policy to develop and maintain relationships with artists, art patrons, curators from area art institutions, and the general public.
– Serve on Library and University committees, task forces, and project teams as needed and appropriate.

Required Qualifications:

– Master’s degree in art history, art administration, museum studies or related field
– 3 years of museum or exhibition related experience
– Understanding of curatorial practices and methodology
– Experience in project and budget management
– Ability to interact effectively with a wide range of audiences including students, faculty, donors, curators from area art institutions, collectors, artists, volunteers, and community members
– Strong computer skills
– Excellent oral and written communication skills, including presentation/public speaking experience
– High level of customer service skills
– Ability to work independently and in a team environment
– Ability to lift minimum of 40 pounds.

Preferred Qualifications:

– Knowledge of studio glass
– Skills in art cataloguing software, Past Perfect preferred
– Experience developing both physical and virtual exhibitions
– Supervisory experience
