The Center for Architecture is New York City’s premier public space for exhibitions, discussion, and professional exchange on architecture, urbanism, and design. With multiple galleries, a lecture hall, library and conference rooms, the Center is a place for the public and design professionals to meet, engage and inform the public dialogue on the built environment. Established in October 2003, by the American Institute of Architects, New York Chapter and its educational affiliate, the Center for Architecture Foundation, the Center has grown to encompass a range of partners and programs, including the annual city-wide festival, Archtober. Since its opening, the Center has presented 20 exhibitions a year and thousands of programs, symposia, and educational lectures. The atmosphere at the Center is fast-paced with an energetic, driven and enthusiastic board and staff.

The Director of Public Programs, working with leadership and Senior Staff of the AIA New York Chapter, creates, manages, and coordinates quality programming for the Center for Architecture. The Director of Public Programs also develops, presents, and distributes events and programs that respond to the diverse audience interests of the Center for Architecture with interested outside organizations, individuals, communities, and civic entities. In addition, the Director of Public Programs works with the Executive Director and Director of Exhibitions and AIANY Chapter Committees to support the content of the exhibitions with collateral symposia and lectures. The Archtober initiative is also supported by the program management function of the Director of Public Programs.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

Program Management
-Responsible for the planning, execution, and quality assurance of the diverse Center for Architecture programs.
-Manages many different types of programs, including, but not limited to lectures, symposia, exhibition related events, tours, and festival events for design professionals and the general public
-Coordinates sponsorship, content, donor opportunities with the Director of Development and Director of Exhibitions
-Determines educational value of programs eligible for Continuing Education Credits.

Archtober
-Coordinates annual month-long festival with Archtober Assistant, Communications Director and Festival Director.
-Facilitates Building of the Day tour program of Archtober with Archtober Assistant
-Coordinates programs and activities with partner organizations and outreach
-Manages Archtober budget, including collateral production, marketing, and advertising.

Strategic Planning
-Initiate planning of multi-year program content for the Center for Architecture as directed by Center for Architecture Board of Directors

Program Evaluation
-Develop and implement evaluation measures for tracking the Center for Architecture programs.

Job Requirements
This position requires an energetic, organized, and detail oriented individual. Familiarity with architecture and the built environment is required. Bachelor’s Degree required, MBA/MPA highly desirable. Candidates must have three to five years experience in an architecture and/or urban design institution. Superior command of MS Office. Database management a plus. Salary commensurate with experience.
