The Utah Museum of Fine Arts (UMFA) is located on the campus of the University of Utah, and offers visitors the opportunity to explore over 5,000 years of human creativity with a collection of 20,000 art works from classic Greek and Roman antiquities to cutting-edge, contemporary art. Founded in 1914, the UMFA is the state of Utah’s official museum creating exhibitions and public programs that serve a wide array of audiences. Housed today in the award-winning Marcia and John Price Museum Building, the UMFA has a $3M operating budget and welcomes 120,000 visitors annually. The Director of Education and Engagement plans, develops, implements, and oversees all aspects of a lively and diverse education program, related primarily to the UMFA’s collections and exhibitions and aimed at meeting the needs of many diverse audiences. The Museum’s outreach efforts are exemplary; serving thousands of teachers and students across the state of Utah with a state-funded outreach program that brings professional development opportunities, inventive curricula tied to state standards, original art objects, and art making projects into classrooms across the state. The Director of Education & Engagement is proactive in identifying and orchestrating collaborative programming with other arts and cultural organizations in the community. The Director of Education & Engagement is responsible for developing relationships across campus with faculty and University administration for the purpose of creating multi-disciplinary programs that offer audiences a variety of perspectives on the content of the Museum’s exhibitions, collections, and program. This individual will serve as part of the Executive Director’s Senior Management Team and report to the Executive Director.

Responsibilities: 1. Takes the leadership role in planning and developing integrated education programs for general audiences, university audiences, docents and volunteers, children and families, and educators. 2. Oversees and administers the Museum’s education program and initiatives including creating and overseeing an annual budget and overseeing a staff of six, plus interns and volunteers. 3. Spearheads programming for adult and University audiences, including lectures, artist talks, panel discussions, symposia, films, and gallery talks. 4. Serves as the UMFA’s educational liaison with local school districts and the State’s Department of Education; elementary and secondary teachers and art specialists; other regional universities and colleges; and the broader Salt Lake City community. 5. Works closely with curatorial staff to develop and produce educational and interpretive materials and related public programming for exhibitions and the permanent collections, including: labels, gallery guides, hands-on interactive stations, and brochures. 6. Occasionally works with colleagues in education, curatorial, and faculty at the University to create exhibitions and installations of the museum’s collection. 7. Plays a leadership role in the development and inclusion of technologies into the Museum’s interpretive program, such as cellphone tours and the Museum’s website. 8. Oversees the planning and implementation of community events and outreach programs for schools and community groups. 9. Lectures on and leads tours of the Museum’s exhibitions and collections. 10. With the Executive Director and Director of Development, works to seek and secure funding for educational programs and activities. Assists with grant writing as needed. 11. Assists faculty, students, scholars, docents, and members of the community involved in research of the UMFA’s collections and exhibitions.

Job Requirements
• M.A. in art education, museum education, art history or a related field. • A minimum of three year’s experience in leadership position in an art museum education department or related experience. • Excellent oral and written communication skills and proven teaching skills and experience. • Excellent organization, interpersonal, and decision-making skills, with demonstrated effective supervisory experience. • Knowledge of current museum education philosophies, methods, and trends. • Actively participates in the field, developing and maintaining relationships with other museum educators; attends and participates in conferences regionally and nationally. • Proven grant-writing experience and success. Effective track-record as a budget manager. • Experience with financial and strategic planning in support of the Museum’s mission.
