Visitor Services Weekend & Event Supervisor
Reports To: Visitor Services and Retail Coordinator
Part-Time Position: 24-32 Hours/Week (Weekend days, Weekend and Weekday Evenings)
Rate of Pay: $16/Hour

Brooklyn Historical Society (BHS) seeks a dynamic, outgoing and experienced individual to lead the Visitor Services team of part-time staff on weekends and during special events. This is an exciting opportunity to get involved with a growing cultural organization in Brooklyn and be part of our thoughtful and engaging public programing series and rental business.

The Visitor Services Weekend & Event Manager will take a leading role in managing and developing a growing team of part-time Visitor Services and Special Event Staff and Volunteers. He or she will set the standard for customer service at the reception desk and create a welcoming and engaging environment for the public and staff alike. Responsibilities include managing daily operations at the reception desk, including; interfacing with the public in a friendly and welcoming manner, handling admissions, retail sales, and supervising security functions. He or she will also motivate staff and drive Gift Store and Membership sales. This position works closely with our Visitor Services, Retail, and Development Departments, serving as the point person and staff leader during programs and special events. The VS Weekend & Events Supervisor is responsible for training staff to perform a wide range of duties from inventory to admissions. The ideal applicant must be available weekends and after-hours, as he or she will be supervising staff at evening rentals and special events. The weekly schedule may fluctuate but will involve working a minimum of three, and a maximum of four, 8-hour shifts each week. Weekly schedule will be: Thursday 1-9PM, Saturday and Sunday 10-6pm and then additional evening events when necessary. Proven experience training and supervising staff is a must!

Time Breakdown:
60% Supervising and directing daily operations and staff at the Reception Desk/Gift Shop.
25% Managing & directing evening rentals and special events.
15% Administration and scheduling.

Qualifications
Minimum of 2 years’ experience managing visitor services, retail floor, volunteer or operations management.
Proven ability to effectively train and supervise staff and create a culture of excellent customer service.
Superior customer service skills
Ability to drive retail sales through superior customer service and maintenance of visual presentations.
Demonstrated ability to problem-solve quickly and efficiently.
Excellent interpersonal, communications and technological skills.
Ability and willingness to respond to a rapidly changing environment.
Team-player with an engaging, outgoing personality that can motivate staff to improve performance and encourage growth.
Prior experience managing or executing events at a cultural organization, event space, restaurant or catering company.

Responsibilities Include
Oversee weekend front desk operations, including; open/close the building, reconcile daily sales and cash box, manage security and maintenance staff, troubleshoot building or technology issues.
Establish a positive and pro-active front desk environment.
Direct morning or evening staff meetings to review the daily schedule of tours, events and programs.
Set daily goals for sales to motivate staff and support projected sales and museum visitation.
Manage the flow of visitors and tours through the reception area and exhibitions spaces.
Receive new shipments of retail inventory, restock and maintain Gift Shop displays and merchandizing.
Retail Inventory and database management.
Manage part-time staff during special events with a focus on customer service and time management.
Coordinate and liaise with clients on weekends to ensure the successful execution of rentals.
Attend weekly meetings with VS, Public Programs and Development teams to ensure adequate preparation and staffing for events, rentals, public programs and front desk shifts.
Assist in training, supervising and evaluating part-time VS and Special Event Staff, as well as Volunteers.
Maintain and refresh exhibitions daily.
Communicate with facilities staff regarding any maintenance needs.
Generate Sales/Admissions reports and assist VS and Retail Manager in reacting to trends and boosting sales.
