The Curator of Art reports to the Director of Curatorial Affairs and Public Programming and is responsible for the administrative and technical work as the head of the fine art department at Gilcrease Museum. In collaboration with other curators and staff, creates collections-based exhibitions and publications; including research, concept development, interpretation, object selection, organization, design and layout of exhibitions. Research and writing skills required for a variety of academic, exhibition-related, popular and promotional media. The Curator of Art arranges access to the collections for approved researchers and benefactors. Presenting lectures, public presentations and preparing official reports are required.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES:

Performs administrative, supervisory, and technical duties as the head of the fine art department.
Supervises associate art curators, volunteers, and interns in the art department.
Works with the curatorial, exhibitions and education staff on the planning, development and implementation of permanent and traveling exhibitions.
Identifies and facilitates acquisitions of fine art through purchase and gift.
In consultation with curatorial staff, develops a long-range plan for art acquisitions.
Monitors and make recommendations for care of the art collection.
Works with conservators engaged in the preservation and restoration of fine art.
Works with the registrars in tracking data related to fine arts.
Conducts original research on the collection and supervises the activities of associate curators engaged in research.
Contributes to the publication of periodic magazines, and assists in the preparation of articles for periodic publications and exhibition catalogues.
Works closely with the digitization team to create and expand metadata related to the collections.
Assists authors, professors, students, the public, and curators of other institutions in research related to fine art.
In conjunction with the university and museum staff, writes grants and assists in other fund-raising activities for museum programs, exhibitions, and collection needs.
Performs various administrative duties such as writing correspondence and maintaining files.
Conducts VIP and behind-the-scenes tours, conducts gallery talks and speaks to various groups as requested.
Works with Gillies volunteers to provide training for docents and reviews content of programs lead by Gillies.
Provides Docent training for specific exhibits, and conducts Docent reviews.
May periodically teach a course in The University of Tulsa’s Master’s degree program in Museum Science and Management.
Participates in committee and staff meetings.
Performs any other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

Minimum Qualifications: Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in art, art history, American history, or a closely related field, and six (6) years of responsible experience in the field of specialization, and two (2) years experience in museum display techniques and methods. Comprehensive knowledge of American art; demonstrated experience in exhibition development and implementation; considerable knowledge of the operation and functions of a museum and its role in the community; and demonstrated skills in developing and participating in educational and public programs applicable to art and historical museum exhibits and displays. Demonstrated record of scholarly research in the area of specialization; ability to evaluate museum artworks as to condition, authenticity, and origination; ability to evaluate conservation needs of the collection; ability to write comprehensive technical reports and articles. The successful candidate will have excellent speaking and interpersonal skills that allow them work effectively with staff, donors, volunteers, TU faculty and administrators and the public. Experience with The Museum System (TMS) or similar database management system is a plus; willingness to teach a course for Museum Science and Management program. Proficient in PC or Mac software applications, including Word, Excel, Visio, and Outlook. Knowledge and appreciation of the American Alliance of Museum’s best practices for the care and maintenance of collections is required.

Preferred Qualifications: A doctorate from an accredited college or university in art, art history, American history, or a closely related field or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Managerial experience in the supervision of professional and volunteer staffs and students is preferred.

Physical Requirements: Dexterity enough to use a keyboard and telephone; occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling up to 50 pounds; may be subject to extended periods of walking, standing, sitting, reaching, balancing, bending, kneeling, handling, feeling, climbing, and twisting; and vision, speech, and hearing sufficient to perform the essential tasks.
