The Bronx Museum of the Arts (BXMA) is a contemporary art museum, founded in 1971 to serve the culturally diverse populations of the Bronx and the greater New York metropolitan area. The Museum has a long-standing commitment to increasing and stimulating audience participation in the visual arts through its permanent collection, special exhibitions, public and education programs. It introduces visitors to the dynamic and challenging voices that shape the contemporary arts field of both today and tomorrow. The Education Department at the Bronx Museum of the Arts works as a catalyst for ideas and dialogue. We promote engaging and transformational art experiences with the goal of connecting the viewer’s personal experience with relevant areas in contemporary culture.

The Education Department seeks a talented, motivated individual to join our small team of educators. The Group Visits Program (GVP) at the Bronx Museum of the Arts serves a wide audience ranging from Pre K to senior groups. This Educator should have a passion for making contemporary art accessible to our diverse audience. A positive, outgoing demeanor is essential, as well as excellent planning and organization skills.

Essential Job Functions
Develop a tour based on current exhibitions Attend quarterly meetings with department staff
Respond to email communication in a timely manner
Flexible schedule M-F 10am-2pm (with occasional evenings and weekend work)
Design age-appropriate art projects for workshops inspired by the Museum’s current exhibitions and permanent collection, utilizing a range of media.
Being able to work and/or be trained using Augusto Boal’s theater techniques
Communicate with GVP coordinator on a regular basis re: supplies, scheduling, problems, etc.
Support program assessment
Update the department blog on a regular basis
Act as a resource to visitors about the Museum’s history and collections (some training will be provided)

Qualifications
The ideal candidate for this position must be motivated, resourceful and enthusiastic about the mission of The Bronx Museum of the Arts. He/she must have excellent writing, research, and communication skills, attention to detail, ability to multitask, and a strong capacity to work independently. A background in education and/or museum studies, art history, arts administration, contemporary art and art studio, as well as a knowledge of the cultural life of the Bronx is preferred.

Experience working in a museum or educational setting.
BA, BFA, or equivalent and at least 2 years of teaching experience.
Knowledge of museum interpretation strategies.
Familiarity with the New York City Department of Education’s Blueprint for Visual Arts and the Common Core State Standards.
Excellent communication and time management skills.
Ability to multitask and problem solve.
Must have basic MS Office skills (e.g. Outlook, Excel, and Word).
Must be bilingual Spanish speaker, multi-lingual, preferred.
