This is a temporary full time position; 2 years. The Bilingual Interpretive Specialist oversees the execution of the bilingual (English/Spanish) interpretive program for Frida Kahlo’s Garden, including audio tour, signage, and other interpretive projects as needed. He/she helps to coordinate evaluation of the bilingual interpretive program and to develop long term bilingual interpretive planning to enhance engagement of Spanish-speaking visitors. He/she will:
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
• With AVP of Exhibitions and Public Engagement and Curator of Interpretive Content for Public Engagement and departments including Horticulture, the Library, and Science, identify interpretive needs for exhibition
• Assist with exhibition research, including obtaining and translating Spanish language resources and assisting in correspondence with Spanish-speaking institutions to obtain resources and project materials
• Assist in bilingual interpretive development, including writing, editing, and production of Spanish language signage, audio tours, handouts, and smart phone application materials
• Partner with Community Relations and Marketing Departments to promote exhibition to local Bronx community, including the annual Fiesta de Flores (offered by the Garden each September as part of Hispanic Heritage Month) and Bronx Green-Up (the community outreach division of the Garden that provides horticulture training and assistance to groups interested in improving the Bronx through gardening and greening projects)
• Track and evaluate usage of and visitor experience with bilingual interpretive tools (including thorough on-site visitor surveys and interviews), and develop weekly and summative reports
• Assist in the development of staff training in advance of exhibition opening for all staff members who interface with the public
• With AVP of Exhibitions and Public Engagement and Curator of Interpretive Content for Public Engagement, write a strategic plan for the future integration of bilingual interpretation and programs into Garden exhibitions and general programmatic operations
• With AVP of Exhibitions and Public Engagement and Curator of Interpretive Content for Public Engagement, initiate internal practices that support multilingual interpretation of the permanent collection
Qualifications
• Graduate of a humanities MA program, preferably with a concentration in museums, art history, or Latin American/Latino studies
• 1-3 years experience in a museum or nonprofit setting
• Strong interest in working in museum interpretation and/or educational and community outreach to Latino and Hispanic communities
• Fluent in Spanish with experience translating written works from English into Spanish and Spanish in English
• Strong organizational and planning skills
• Must have strong research, communication, and writing skills
• Experience in creating Spanish-language interpretation is preferred but no required
• Two year position for October 2014 through October 2016
