The American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) seeks an individual to manage and advance its exemplary youth science achievement program, the Science Research Mentoring Program (SRMP). SRMP is a competitive, multi-year out of school program that supports high achieving, low-resourced students to realize great advances in their science learning and college readiness. The Manager will be responsible for all aspects of the Museum’s SRMP program, which include recruiting and supporting scientist mentors, educators and youth, overseeing the development of curricula and implementation of preparatory coursework in the fields of science represented by the Museum, manage budgets and grants. In addition, the Manager will collaborate with the Museum’s Youth Initiatives group to expand the program in a city-wide consortium of similar science research institutions. The Manager will be responsible for collaborating and advising across the Youth Initiatives group in a variety of youth programs, and participate in the larger strategic advancement of the Museum’s out-of-school education pipeline. The Manager needs to have a proven track record of authentic scientific research and work in youth education. 

The overarching responsibilities include: developing and implementing the SRMP program at the highest level of rigor, relevance and engagement for youth pursuing science education out of school; lead the conservation biology initiative including course development, career readiness programming; coordinating the development of curriculum, resources, a progressive continuum of courses across disciplines and skills, and research experiences with scientists; developing and nurturing relationships with scientist mentors including postdocs and graduate students within AMNH and externally; developing broader strategies for recruitment and retention of students from diverse and underrepresented communities; leading a team of three people who are responsible for curriculum development and teaching, professional development for scientist mentors and educators, and administration of the program; writing funding proposals and reports; managing budgets and funding sources; co-leading the implementation of the NYC SRMP Consortium and supervise related staff; serving as a strategic thinker and problem solver across program initiatives; assisting with other youth programming as necessary. 

Specific day-to-day responsibilities include, but are not limited to: recruiting and selecting students annually for science research placements; recruiting and selecting scientists (internally and externally) to serve as research mentors and course instructors; supporting the team in developing and implementing the suite of preparatory courses including an intensive summer institute in which students learn laboratory skills; teaching select courses and serving as a mentor and advisor; developing and implementing protocols and advisory process for culminating student research placement year; planning, coordinating and implementing student orientations, graduation events and family nights; supporting college and career readiness programming by soliciting guest speakers, developing relationships with scientists and collections managers and planning college/science field trips; meeting regularly with students and scientists to monitor progress and support mentorship; developing and maintaining program budgets for SRMP and associated grants; conducting administrative duties; participating in Youth Initiatives departmental scope of work as required.  
Required Qualifications:
– Ph.D. in Science 
– At least three years experience working with youth and/or youth serving organizations in an administrative role 
– Expertise in developing partnerships with individuals and organizations 
– Fluency with writing proposals and reports 
– Impeccable organization, coordination, and communication skills 
– Record of working effectively with colleagues and families 
– Record of working in fast-paced environment and multi-tasking 
– Experience with creating systems, and maintaining records 
– Experience with managing budgets 
– Familiarity with New York City school systems
