The Asheville Art Museum is seeking an Assistant Curator to join its staff. The Assistant Curator will work with the curatorial team to implement an exhibitions program that reflects the Museum’s commitment to American art of the 20th and 21st century.

Responsibilities

Conceiving and organizing special exhibitions. General responsibilities include writing exhibition script, conducting research, drafting loan requests, contacting lenders, composing checklists and coordinating exhibition details with other departments.
Collaborating with Education department to create exhibition-related programming
Giving exhibition and collection related gallery talks
Helping organize and manage traveling exhibitions including correspondence with venues, drafting contracts and answering questions
Helping identify works for acquisition and developing relationships with collectors, sponsors, artists, donors, etc.
Providing content for exhibition-related printed materials
Providing Development department with content for grant proposals
Conducting research on permanent collection and exhibition-related topics
Interacting with the arts community and civic bodies as an advocate for the arts and the Museum.
Job Requirements
Education and Skills Required

Post-secondary degree in Art History or related field with an emphasis on Modern and Contemporary Art; Broad knowledge of American art of the mid-20th century to the present; strong research and writing ability, as well as strong computer skills. Ability to speak in front of groups.

Physical Requirements

Curatorial staff should be able to assist in the installation of exhibitions, including the ability to lift, move and handle art and general museum furnishing.

After-Hours + Travel Requirements

This position requires after-hours participation in Museum events, exhibition openings, lectures etc. Position may also require local and non-local travel.
