Under minimal supervision, develops, implements and manages educational projects and programs relating to the permanent collection and changing exhibitions that foster an appreciation and deeper understanding of art. Collaborates and leads cross-functional teams to achieve educational programming goals. May teach, train and supervise on a regular basis. Oversees all aspects of K-12 school programs at the Getty Villa, including museum education staff supervision, administrative reporting on budget and statistics, and docent training. Reports to the Manager of School Programs. The Education Specialist for School Programs is responsible for training school gallery docents, providing models for gallery instruction and ensuring quality execution of K-12 gallery experiences meet department expectations. Researches, defines and implements best practices in the field of museum education and school community collaborations as it pertains to the Villa site. Tracks Villa resources and reports Villa statistics on the department’s Title I bus initiative for local schools. Fosters internal understanding of school audience needs, ranging from logistical details, to collaboration with curators and conservators in program content development. Acts as department liaison to Security and Events to maximize access by school groups for the Villa site. Supervises professional department staff responsible for school programs operations at the Villa, multi-visit programs and docent training, helping to set their work priorities and providing performance feedback by way of mid-year and year-end appraisals. Also supervises department scheduler responsible for school arrivals at the Villa. Some weekend work required.

MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

Ensures a quality museum experience for a specialized audience through project and program development
Develops goals and objectives and implements projects based on educational initiatives
Manages project or program budget, assists in budgeting process
May train educators and educational support staff, observe and assess programs, and supervise staff
May develop and teach gallery classes for educational audiences
May serve as liaison for curatorial departments, schedules curatorial tours, and edits exhibition and permanent gallery texts
Manages projects; determines priorities and action items; prepares and manages project budget; provides supporting documentation and updates as necessary; collaborates across departments as required
Works to inspire curiosity about, and enjoyment and understanding of, the visual arts by working with specific audiences
Communicates and collaborates extensively with internal and external experts in various fields, including curators, teachers, school administrators, and artists
Coordinates program and project logistics on-site and online
Collaborates on the creation of resources for target audiences
May conceive and implement training and professional development opportunities for target audiences

Job Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s degree; Master’s degree in museum education, art education, art history, or closely related field strongly preferred
5-8 years of project/process management and subject area experience
Foreign language skills

Proven knowledge of visual arts practice, local artists and creative resources
