The Daniel O. Morris South Carolina Lowcountry Heritage Trust, a private operating foundation, is launching a new exhibition, programming and community center, the Morris Lowcountry Heritage Center, in a cluster of three historic buildings in Ridgeland, SC. The Center is scheduled to open in fall 2014 in a historic gas station at the center of the complex with an exhibition and related programming on the history of U.S. Route 17. The Trust is seeking an experienced program director to oversee the growth and development of this exciting start-up.

Responsibilities will include:

• Developing small temporary and traveling exhibitions

• Creating public programs for a range of audiences

• Developing services for schools and out-of-school programs for youth

• Identifying excellent heritage programs to collaborate with and/or emulate

• Forging partnerships with heritage and educational organizations in the 4 county area

• Representing the Center in the community, including creating an advisory board

• Assisting with efforts to preserve the complex of buildings

Although the Center does not anticipate building a collection, the program director will work with museums, historical societies and libraries to help build collections of objects, documents, photographs and oral histories that document life in the Lowcountry. The program director will report to and work closely with the trustee of the Trust.

The Trust is looking for a mature, entrepreneurial self-starter, who can work independently to shape and realize a vision for the Center. Applicants should have a master’s degree in history, American studies, folklife/folklore, museum studies or similar field and at least 5 years of experience developing programs for a range of audiences. Knowledge of the history and culture of the Lowcountry is a plus but not required.

Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled. Please send a cover letter, resume, three professional references and salary requirements to: Morris.Heritage.Trust@gmail.com.
