Reporting to the Director of Development Systems, the Manager of Development Research and Prospect Management will provide leadership in all matters pertaining to prospect research and analysis of biographical and financial data on individuals, corporations, and foundations. Utilizing industry standard prospect research tools, he/she will be responsible for ensuring that NEAq fundraisers and volunteers have access to comprehensive reports/briefings and will ensure all such reports/briefings are updated appropriately. He/she will be responsible for creating and maintaining an effective and healthy prospect pipeline that will facilitate robust fundraising activity and results.

  1. Conducts research on development prospects and prepares briefings and research reports for a diverse audience that includes frontline fundraisers, senior staff and volunteers. Ensures that prospect data is reviewed and updated appropriately. Establishes research methodologies and data gathering formats relevant to specific requests and projects.

 

  1. Manages prospect portfolios and provides leadership in identifying, assigning and tracking new prospects.  Chairs monthly prospect review meetings with key development staff to ensure that prospects are being moved appropriately through the development cycle.  Provides counsel to individual fundraisers in appropriate use and application of research materials in prospect assessment.

 

  1. Utilizes the Raiser’s Edge database so that prospect and proposal data is current and reportable. Provides leadership in how the New England Aquarium defines proposal stages and communicates such strategy effectively to key stakeholders emphasizing the importance of movement through the pipeline. Uses Raiser’s Edge and other resources to identify potential new donors through key indicators such as giving history.

 

  1. Responsible for creating and managing effective donor pyramids. Works with senior staff to ensure that goals are realistic, and uses available data and due process to ensure pyramids are flexible but practical.

 

  1. Works with the Supervisor of Gift Processing and Development Systems to facilitate the creation and distribution of reports that relate to the Aquarium’s prospect research and prospect management efforts.
  2. Regularly reviews format and composition of research reports, briefings and other communication materials to ensure that the needs of key stakeholders are being met. Creates standardized templates for event briefings and research reports.

 

  1. Supervises New England Aquariums use of commercial research tools such as Lexis-Nexis, etc. and identifies emerging needs. Manages vendor relations and ensures effective analysis and integration of all data to bolster fundraising efforts.

 

  1. Closely monitors volunteer and donor activity and uses supporting data to recommend potential candidates to Boards and Committees.

 

  1. Ensures that New England Aquarium adheres to best practice in its research and prospect management efforts. Participates in professional organizations and networks with colleagues to share information about prospect research and to identify new tools and sources of information.

Qualifications:

Minimum Training and Experience

-Bachelor’s degree required.

-A minimum of 5 years of fundraising experience in prospect research

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Excellent communication skills. Excellent written skills.

Knowledge of research techniques, methodology, and online and print resources, including commercial databases (Lexis-Nexis, etc.), to identify prospects through constituent list review, electronic database screening, and peer screening.

Thorough understanding of fundraising and campaign readiness fundamentals.

Understanding of wealth indicators and market trends.

Proficiency in using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, etc.), and experience with relational database software (preferably Blackbaud Raiser’s Edge) and electronic database screening (preferably Blackbaud Target Analytics Researcher’s Edge)

Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information appropriately.
