This is a part-time museum educator position reporting to the Director of Interpretation. TheSpark!Lab host welcomes visitors of all ages to Spark!Lab, encouraging them to explore their inventive creativity and have fun as they develop their skills to create, innovate, problem-solve, and collaborate. The Spark!Lab host will interact with the interpretation team and visitors of diverse ages with a primary focus on the general visitor as well as visiting school students.  Will also act as an ambassador for Spark!Lab within the community at large.

The Spark!Lab host facilitates engaging, educational experiences for visitors as they interact with history, science, technology, and art activities featured in Spark!Lab. Developed by the Smithsonian Institution’s Lemelson Center for the Study of Invention and Innovation at the National Museum of American History (NMAH), Spark!Lab is a hands-on, creative laboratory that engages children and families in the process of innovation.  Among other duties, the host will maintain a safe environment, ensure that museum policies are followed within the pavilion, and that materials are inventoried and kept in stock.

Qualifications:

  • Friendly, people-person who loves to interact with the public
  • Interest in creativity, invention, and innovative thinking
  • Interested in and familiar with science, technology, engineering, design, and the arts a plus
  • Pleasant in demeanor and professional presentation
  • Experience working as an educator (formally or informally) preferred
  • Experience working with the general public, in a museum or other public setting preferred
  • Associates Degree with demonstrated professional experience preferred
  • Ability to work effectively under minimal supervision
  • Ability to communicate professionally with administrators, educators, and the general public
  • Comfortable being filmed and photographed for use in online engagement efforts preferred
  • Basic understanding of major social media platforms preferred
