Job Description/Major Duties

Reports to: Board of Directors

Full-time position

Houston Center for Photography (HCP) seeks a proven leader to serve as Executive Director. HCP is

located in the heart of Houston’s museum district within walking distance of The Menil Collection and

the Rothko Chapel. Our mission is to increase society’s understanding and appreciation of photography

and its evolving role in contemporary culture. HCP strives to encourage artists, build audiences,

stimulate dialogue, and promote inquiry about photography and related media through education

programs, exhibitions, publications, fellowship programs, and community collaborations. We create

meaningful photography experiences.

Houston Center for Photography enjoys a long-standing reputation for presenting exhibitions and

educational programs that are of the highest cultural and artistic merit. As one of the only organizations

in Houston focusing on the presentation of contemporary photography, HCP fills a particular niche

within city’s vibrant and diverse visual arts landscape. Our exhibitions are regularly reviewed by both

local and national media and we have enjoyed opportunities for program collaboration with many

local organizations. HCP is dedicated to exhibiting important work that is not being shown elsewhere in

Houston.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the organization’s professional leadership and

management, should have a background in arts administration and experience with fundraising,

financial management, strategic planning, supervisory experience, the ability to work well with a diverse

population of individuals and have a healthy sense of humor. Reporting to the Board of Directors, he/

she will advance the values of the organization and its mission.

Job Requirements

Financial Responsibilities

• Manage budget and investments, through Director of Finance

• Establish fundraising goals and direct process to achieve them

• Cultivate new donors in varied contacts, including face-to-face meetings, written solicitations and event participation

• Direct and participate in donor requests with foundations, government agencies, individual donors, and provide stewardship for funds raised

• Provide leadership for the annual Print Auction, HCP’s major fundraising event

• Direct and provide guidance to increased Annual Fund donations

• Direct and provide guidance to increase membership and dues revenue

• Direct and provide guidance to maintaining or increasing contributions from private foundations and government agencies

Governance and Board Responsibilities

• Primary interface with 22-member Board and 36-member Advisory Council.

• Lead staff participation in involvement with Board committees

• Provide leadership vision on strategic direction for HCP, in collaboration with the Board of Directors

• Execute Board’s strategy to expand and sustain organizational growth

Administrative Responsibilities

• Manage full- and part-time staff, as well as contractors and consultants

• Direct policies and procedures for compensation/benefits and all staff activities

• Oversee building management and lease with the Menil Foundation

Education Responsibilities

• Guide education program, in collaboration with Director of Education and staff

• Assure high-quality class opportunities are delivered to the community, in collaboration with Creative Director

Exhibition Responsibilities

• Guide exhibitions at HCP, in collaboration with Curator

• Assure that HCP maintains its leadership influence in the photography community, in collaboration with Creative Director

Key Skills and Requirements

• 5+ years in senior management of a non-profit arts organization; advanced degree preferred

• Strong financial, fundraising and management skills

• Excellent communications skills to promote HCP’s vision

• Ability to interact diplomatically with all constituencies

• Commitment to cultivating the next generation of photography enthusiasts through education

programs, exhibitions and publications
