The Cleveland Museum of Art’s Exhibitions and Publications department seeks applicants for its Assistant Editor position. Reporting to the Editor-in-Chief, the Assistant Editor has editorial responsibility for exhibition and permanent collection catalogs, booklets, didactics (label and panel copy) and other interpretive graphics, gallery cards, brochures, flyers, rack cards, and signage. The Assistant Editor will read, edit, correct, and revise copy to ensure clear, precise, and “visitor-centered” language in grammatical and stylistic form; collaborates with various museum departments to prepare, maintain, distribute, and monitor annual label and publication production schedules; edits and proofreads miscellaneous ephemera as necessary; and provides assistance on didactics for mobile tours and iPad app tours.

Job Requirements

Qualified candidates will have a Bachelor’s degree in English and a minimum of five years of editorial experience in a museum or cultural institution. A Master’s degree is preferred. Excellent organizational, interpersonal, research, and decision making skills are also required. Candidates must be able to work under pressure to meet deadlines while focusing on several different projects simultaneously and have the ability to adjust to changing production schedules all the while maintaining poise and efficiency.
