The Editorial Director will be part of a management team with the Executive Director of Publishing, Associate Director of Production, and Director of Technical Imaging.  Works with museum administration to conceptualize and create the museum’s publishing program.  Helps establish department priorities and manages workload, supervising editorial staff, including Editors, Associate Editors, and temporary/Special Projects editorial staff.  Responsible for editing the highest quality museum publications within a specified time frame and budget, working with project directors, authors, curators, production staff, freelance editors, freelance proofreaders, designers, printers and others on full range of museum publications, including print and digital publications.  Edits and coordinates various museum publications, including exhibition catalogues, scholarly collection catalogues, guidebooks, labels, brochures, and digital publications.  Oversees porjects in consultation with the Executive Director of Publishing, the Administration, and all relevant curators, and supervising editors on projects.

Job Requirements


Qualifications
Master’s Degree in Art History, Literature, or a related discipline is required.  Must have at least 5 years of experience as an editor in a museum publications department (preferable), university press, trade publishing house, or comparable institution.  Previous supervisory experience is required.  Must have proven ability to perform all aspects of the editorial process and manage complex projects.  Must exhibit exceptional organizational and managerial skills, attention to detail, strong sense of responsibility, and be able to handle multiple projects simultaneously and prioritize workflow.  Excellent writing ability and solid grammatical skills, as well as demonstrable communication and diplomacy skills.  Familiarity with book design and editing software (such as InDesign or Drupal) will be highly valued.  Familiarity with foreign language(s)
