The Scottish Rite Masonic Museum & Library is seeking a full-time assistant curator.  The successful candidate will be self-motivated and a creative thinker with excellent attention to detail and strong writing skills.

Reporting to the Director of Collections, the assistant curator will work as part of a team but with latitude in the use of initiative.  Although prior knowledge of the history of Freemasonry and fraternalism is not required, the successful candidate will be expected to gain subject knowledge on the job, with guidance from the Museum & Library’s professional staff.

The assistant curator will aid in the coordination of activities engaged in acquiring, cataloging, exhibiting and educating the public about the collection of the Scottish Rite Masonic Museum & Library.  The collection, which numbers over 17,000 objects, is strong in American Masonic and fraternal items and is one of the largest collections of its kind in the world.  Primary activities for this position will include working to make the collection more accessible online and promoting the online collection through writing and speaking about it.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Essential duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Working with the Director of Collections to plan digital projects to make the collection more accessible; implements these projects and promotes them
  • Assisting Collections staff with promoting the collection and collections management activities on social media and the Museum & Library blog, as well as in print publications and at scholarly conferences and through speaking engagements
  • Assisting with documentation of objects for acquisition and deaccession
  • Assisting with answering inquiries about the collection
  • Assisting with cataloging and researching the collection
  • Recruits and supervises interns and volunteers as needed
  • Performs other duties as assigned/required

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in American history, museum studies or other appropriate field, or five to ten years related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Demonstrated knowledge of trends and practices in museum curation and registration, as well as material culture; knowledge of American Freemasonry and fraternalism is a plus
  • Experience with collections databases and social media, as well as online applications
  • Enthusiasm for Masonic, fraternal and American history
  • Strong historical research and analysis skills
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Excellent writing skills
  • Strong customer service orientation and interpersonal skills
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Must be team-oriented, collaborative and flexible
  • Ability to occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds

Work Schedule:

Either Monday through Friday, 8:30 to 4:30 OR Tuesday through Saturday, 8:30 to 4:30; some Saturdays may be required.
