The Nautical Nights Assistant Manager is second-in-command of Battleship Cove’s most popular program: overnight camping aboard the World War II battleship USS Massachusetts. The Assistant Manager will aid the Nautical Nights manager to lead and coordinate the program, working to ensure a safe, enjoyable and educational experience for 100 to 550 guests. The ideal assistant manager will be a strong communicator, observant, proactive, adaptable and interested in helping visitors (primarily children) understand World War II naval life.
Principal Responsibilities:
In the absence of the Nautical Nights Manger, the Assistant Manager will be responsible for the following duties:
Supervise all major aspects of the program, including:
-Guest check-in
-Fire drill and other safety and emergency procedures
-Dinner and breakfast
-Leader meeting
-Activities
-Staff patrols
Create bunking assignments for each overnight encampment
Prepare leaders’ packets for incoming guests
Provide crew and overnight guests with a schedule of activities for each encampment
Enforce established rules and safety and emergency policies
Sleep on the ship and be on-call for emergency issues that may arise through the night
Record log-book entry for each overnight encampment
The Assistant Manager will also assist the Nautical Nights Manager with the following:
Direct the crew in their regular duties
Provide check-in and orientation to guests
Perform maintenance tasks to ensure cleanliness and safety
Carry out emergency procedures
Provide a basic knowledge of the USS Massachusetts’ history, functions and Navy life on-board during World War II to guests
This is a part-time position. Hours will vary based on the frequency of overnights. In the absence of the Manager, work hours may be Friday 2:00pm to 10:00am; Saturday 11:00am-10:00am and Sunday 6:00am-10:00 am. An overnight stay on the battleship is required. Working alongside the Manager, work hours are scheduled between Friday 2:00pm to 12:00am; Saturday 11:00am to 12:00am and Sunday 6:00am-10:00am (as needed).
Clear communication skills, friendly and patient demeanor, and ability to conduct oneself in a professional manner in front of adults, children and fellow staff
Ability to stand for long periods of time, climb staircases, work among loud crowds and in adverse weather conditions
