The Curator and Head of the Department of Sculpture and Decorative Arts at the National Gallery of Art has curatorial responsibility for the Gallery’s world-class collection of approximately 1,900 works of sculpture and 600 decorative arts objects, ranging chronologically from the Hellenistic period to the twentieth century. Is principally concerned with the management and development of the collections, staff, and related activities, including scholarly research, interpretation, educating the Gallery’s audiences, developing exhibitions, publishing, preserving, as well as the upkeep, exhibition, loan, and strategic expansion of the Gallery’s collections through gift and purchase. Reports to the Deputy Director/Chief Curator. Hires, supervises, and evaluates two associate curators and one curatorial assistant, as well as fellows and interns, as assigned. The ideal candidate is an experienced curator, recognized scholar and connoisseur of European and American sculpture and decorative arts, specialized in the period of the Italian Renaissance, baroque, 18th century, or 19th century sculpture, and is conversant in all periods of European and American art. The ideal candidate has a record of distinguished scholarship, publications, important acquisitions, and major exhibitions in the field and is well-respected in the international art world among scholars, museum curators and officials, collectors, art dealers, and the art-related press.

1. Knowledge of the history of European and American sculpture and decorative arts, its principles, traditions, historical contexts, research methods, and literary, philosophical, intellectual, classical and religious subject matter.

2. Skill in communications and ability to advise, lecture, teach, conduct and supervise research, and write to interpret major collections of European and American fine art sculpture and decorative arts for diverse audiences.

3. Extensive knowledge of museum practices in developing, managing, and caring for important collections of European and American fine art sculpture and decorative arts, including knowledge of European and American art markets, museum and private collections, collectors, and dealers.

4. Knowledge of organizational procedures and skill in preparing and executing large or complex loan exhibitions and gallery installations, including grant writing, budget management, and working with a broad range of contacts at all levels.

5. Ability of requisite fluency in the languages of critical importance to fields of expertise, including English, working knowledge of European languages, preferably Italian, German, and French.
