Huntington Museum of Art

Huntington, West Virginia

Executive Director

The Huntington Museum of Art, in Huntington, WV, accredited by the AAM, seeks a dynamic individual to serve as its next Executive Director. Our new leader will guide the museum with creativity and vision into its “next chapter,” positioning us to effectively serve a new generation while building on the successes and traditions of our past.

The Huntington Museum of Art is nestled on fifty-two acres with 1.5 miles of nature trails in the wooded hills of Ritter Park, overlooking much of the city and the Ohio River Valley.  It boasts a collection of nearly 16,000 works of art housed in 44,500 square feet which includes four permanent galleries and five galleries for changing exhibitions, studios, a library, an auditorium, and a tropical plant conservatory. Many of the museum’s facilities were designed by world-renowned architect Walter Gropius.

The city of Huntington is the center of a Tri-State Area at the intersection of West Virginia, Ohio, and Kentucky, and sits on the southern banks of the Ohio River. It is the heart of a metropolitan area of 370,000, and is the home of Marshall University, which has an enrollment of 14,000.

Our new director will have a college degree, minimum of 3 years management experience, strong written and speaking skills, demonstrated fund-raising success, an understanding of technology and finance, collaborative skills, and a passion for the arts and the mission of an art museum in today’s changing world.

The director will report to the museum’s Board of Trustees and oversee a professional staff of 23 full-time and part-time employees.  He or she will be expected to foster and maintain a positive and nurturing environment, take the lead in fund-raising, maintain and grow financial stability, target multiple government sources for support, provide curatorial and educational oversight, inspire a large number of volunteers, and serve as the face of the museum in the community.

Interested applicants are encouraged to visit the museum’s web site at www.hmoa.org and to provide a letter of application with a resume and the names and contact information (phone and email) of three references, all in a single PDF, tocarolyn.grass@chhi.org.  Review of the applications begins Nov. 15, 2014, and the search will remain open until the position is filled.

This position is full-time exempt.  The Huntington Museum of Art, a fully accessible facility, is an equal opportunity employer.  All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, or status as a veteran or as a member of the armed forces.
