The Massillon Museum seeks a full-time Curator, responsible for oversight of a 100,000-object collection of art and historical artifacts. The Curator will be responsible for development of both long-term and temporary exhibitions of collection objects, both onsite and those which may travel; development and care of the collections; and working alongside the staff to develop a diverse and innovative exhibition schedule and related programming. The Curator should demonstrate knowledge in his/her field and skills in the preservation of the objects in his/her care, and will be responsible for supervising staff, volunteers, and interns who work with the collections.

This position is responsible for raising the Massillon Museum’s profile through ambitious and intellectually challenging exhibitions, publications, and programs.  An ability to cultivate relationships with donors, professional colleagues, partner organizations and the community is a necessity. The Curator must be able to collaborate with others and function well as a member of a team, but also able to work independently.  Excellent organizational, clerical and communication skills – both verbal and written – are important, as are good people skills.  Proficiency in MS Word is required. Additional skills in Excel, Outlook, Past Perfect, and Adobe Photoshop preferred.  The Curator must be energetic, dynamic, and have demonstrated ability managing multiple priorities.  This position will require occasional evening and weekend hours.

Job Requirements

An advanced degree in art history, history or museum studies is strongly preferred; proven ability in management and administration; evidence of scholarly research and writing; ability to interpret the collections and communicate knowledge relevant to the collections; knowledge of the techniques of selection, evaluation, preservation, restoration and exhibition of objects; and knowledge of the current market and collecting ethics.  Those interested in applying should submit a resume and cover letter to the attention of:  Review Committee, Massillon Museum, 121 Lincoln Way E., Massillon, Oh 44646, or to ancoon@massillonmuseum.org by November 24, 2014 at 5:00pm.
