Position Focus: Reporting to Deputy Director for Exhibitions, Programming, and Education, the Nolen Curator of Education and Academic Affairs envisions and leads the educational endeavors of the Yale University Art Gallery. As head of the Gallery’s Education Department, this position supervises three education curators at the assistant to senior associate level, a departmental assistant, multiple Fellows at the post-graduate and post-doctoral level, and large numbers of student employees. The Curator develops strategy and sets priorities for teaching and other educational initiatives at the Gallery, and oversees staff members’ implementation of these endeavors. This position is responsible for promoting and balancing the Gallery’s educational offerings for various audiences including Yale faculty and students, K-12 teachers and students, families, and adult visitors. The Curator fosters innovation and collaboration in teaching with and the direct study of art collections. S/he actively contributes to and advocates for excellence in the field of museum education and promotes the Gallery’s profile as a unique educational resource on campus and for the greater New England area. The Curator also serves as a primary representative of the Yale University Art Gallery as a leading institution the field of college and university art museums, actively working to advance the reciprocal contribution higher education and art museums can make toward excellence in both arenas.

Qualifications:

Ability to think strategically toward the Gallery’s long-range academic and education program, profile at the University and in the community, and position in the field nationally and internationally.
Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships w/ collaborators at Yale, in the community, and in the field, as well as with diverse museum audiences. Ability to exercise excellent interpersonal skills and relate well to all kinds of people inside and outside of the museum and Yale.
Demonstrated leadership skills. Excellent writing and public speaking skills.
Demonstrated expertise in museum education and excellent teaching skills, including at the university level.
Comprehensive and specialized knowledge of art history or related discipline in one or more of the gallery’s collection areas. General knowledge of art history and cross-disciplinary studies across the Gallery’s collection areas.
Preferred: Leadership experience as evidenced by a record of progressive roles and responsibilities in a museum and/or teaching environment.
