Under the direction of the Senior Curator of Photography, the Curator, Contemporary Photography will play a leading role in managing the growth and development of the photography collection of the last 25 years and in the development and management of exhibitions and interpretive programs related to contemporary photography. The Curator, Contemporary Photography also collaborates with other curators in the department in developing the permanent collection and devising the strategy for accessions and contributes to permanent collection research in the area of expertise.  The Curator will also work with curators in photography and other departments to ascertain their interests in areas that might permit collaboration on accessions and exhibitions, and assist when possible.

 

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conceive and organize a regular program of exhibitions and publications of contemporary photography.
  • Work with the Senior Curator to identify and select travelling shows to present at SFMOMA, adapt and install travelling exhibitions as assigned
  • Participate in the museum’s New Work and SECA programs, as appropriate
  • Serve as departmental liaison to other curatorial departments, and attend departmental meetings as appropriate. Foster collaboration and dialogue between departments.
  • When appropriate, collaborate with other curatorial departments on the acquisition and display of contemporary photography in non-photography designated galleries
  • Lead research of the permanent collection in area of expertise, assist in selecting work to be acquired for the permanent collection in area of expertise
  • Work with Senior Curator, Curator, and Associate Curator on the development of a core body of supporters within the Photography Department for Contemporary Photography. Work with the other curatorial departments as needed to develop and sustain enthusiasm for this area
  • In collaboration with Associate Curator, and in coordination with the Development Department’s recommendation on membership review, explore the formation of a support group for younger photography enthusiasts. Present lectures and walkthroughs to docents, visitors, and other special groups.
  • Develop and maintain advantageous relationships with the community, including artists, dealers, museum colleagues, collectors, and trustees.
  • Attend symposia and art fairs,(as assigned),conduct research, contribute to publications outside the museum and participate actively in the field.

Job Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Education and Training: Advanced degree in art history with special interest in contemporary art and photography.

 

Work Experience:  Three to five years’ museum experience, or equivalent.

 

Skills and Abilities: Demonstrated ability to work with different kinds of people, especially with colleagues and collectors but also with donors, artists, and general public. . Demonstrated creativity in programming. Ability to manage staff, knowledge of photographic history and art history, superb oral and written communication skills essential. Excellent research skills, and ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines. Ability to organize and prioritize, and supervise staff members around a common project. Proficiency in standard office equipment and technologies and software. Embark and Tessitura experience a plus.
