Executive Director

Matheson History Museum, Gainesville, Florida

The Matheson History Museum is seeking a full time dynamic Executive Director to provide leadership and management for a non-profit local history museum which has been serving north-central Florida communities for over 20 years.  This individual will be charged with implementing the museum’s mission to preserve and interpret the history and culture of Alachua County and its environs through the collection, stewardship, and exhibition of archival materials, works of art and artifacts.

A professional with experience in overall museum management, curatorship, exhibits, research, fundraising, public programs, facility operations and the cultivation and fostering of alliances with community partners is sought.  Preference will be given to candidate with past leadership experience and master’s degree or higher.

Executive Director, Matheson History Museum, Inc.

The Executive Director oversees all operations at the Matheson Museum, including:

  • Board Support – Develop agendas and create all documentation for monthly Board and Executive Committee Meetings.  Staff all committee meetings, as appropriate to ensure coordinated and efficient execution of all projects.
  • Budget and Finance – With oversight from Board Treasurer, utilize CBS software to pay all invoices, payroll, taxes and to record all deposits appropriately in Museum bank accounts.  Work with Treasurer to adhere to operating and other budgets.
  • Collections – Oversee Museum Registrar’s work with collection issues, including new acquisitions, cataloging, loans, collections maintenance, etc.
  • Community Outreach and Publicity – Assist the Board of Directors in representing the Museum at public functions. Maintain established working relationships and cooperative arrangements with history, culture and arts groups in the community, as well as any existing partnerships with community or other organizations.  Produce and supervise successful distribution of all Museum publicity.
  • Education Program – Work with Events and Education Coordinator to implement a school and adult education program.
  • Events and Exhibits – Work with Events and Education Coordinator, committee members and individual Board members to oversee and implement the Museum’s annual calendar of events, including exhibitions, public and educational programs, and other events.  Assist with development and implementation of permanent and temporary exhibits.  Ensure a consistent interpretive Museum voice in all public and educational programming.
  • Grants and Fundraising – See outside funding as appropriate through grants and fund raising.  Manage annual fund raising dinner.  Work with donors and granting agencies, solicit funds, and manage projects and stewardship.
  • Membership – Supervise staff in producing annual membership renewal campaign, and all other special campaigns.
  • Museum Facility Rentals – Coordinate Museum’s rental schedule, including calendar, contracts, fees and stewards.
  • Museum Shop – Maintain appropriate stock in Museum shop.
  • Physical Plant and Maintenance – Coordinate routine and emergency maintenance on all Museum property.  Oversee rental units to ensure all payments are up to date.
  • Staff and Volunteers – Supervise staff to insure are working appropriately and efficiently. Coordinate appropriate staff development activities. Supervise all volunteers, interns and rental stewards to ensure effective operation of the Museum.
