The Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation is seeking an Assistant Curator/Curatorial Assistant, Asian Art. As a member of the Curatorial Department, the Assistant Curator/Curatorial Assistant, Asian Art is responsible for curatorial research and implementation support for Guggenheim-organized Asian art exhibitions and scholarly publications, including the Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation projects; for liaison work with Asian institutions; and for translation and interpretation as necessary.

Key Responsibilities:

 

EXHIBITIONS AND PUBLICATIONS

  • As a curator of the Asian Art Initiative, help identify research topics in the  field and contribute to development of exhibition ideas and proposals.
  • Assist the Samsung Senior Curator, Asian Art and Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation Curator of Chinese Art on upcoming exhibitions by supporting artist, object, art critical, and art historical research; and liaise with Development, Publications, Education, Exhibition Management, ASAP, and other museum departments as required.
  • Assist Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation Curator of Chinese Art on exhibition development, implementation, installation, and presentation.
  • Manage loan requests and exhibition databases, including TMS input and maintenance.
  • Assist in preparation and management of scholarly catalogue production and all project-related content for the Guggenheim Website and in all communication materials, including social media, press and marketing, liaising with Publications Department, and website team; oversee image requests and permissions.
  • Compile exhibition catalogue bibliographies and chronologies, as directed on a project-by-project basis.
  • Liaise with Education Department on development, implementation and presentation on public and family programs related to Asian art exhibitions; and on project-related workshops, symposia and online programs.

 

 

COLLECTIONS MANAGEMENT

  • Help identify works for acquisition,  and assist the Samsung Senior Curator, Asian Art on preparing dossiers on proposed acquisitions for the Collections Council, IDC, and Guggenheim Abu Dhabi Museum collections committees; assist with processing proposed gifts of works of art to SRGM; liaise with appropriate collections management teams on conservation examination and final ratification procedures.
  • Assist the Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation Curator of Chinese Art on acquisition procedures for commissioned works of art to enter the Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation Collection.
  • Research and catalogue Asian art collection materials, especially Chinese materials, to develop for the Guggenheim’s collection online and print materials; support maintenance of Curatorial Department files on collection artists.

 

ASIAN ART COUNCIL AND SCHOLARLY MEETINGS

  • Support organization of exhibition advisory committee meetings and Asian Art Council meetings including research on agenda topics, correspondence with invited scholars; arrangement of travel, accommodation and honoraria; preparation of materials including PowerPoint presentations and research binders.
  • Support Robert H. N. Ho Curator of Chinese Art on Asian Art Council meetings devoted to reviewing commission proposals.
  • Oversee transcription and editorial process of proceedings for publication; prepare materials for publication; liaise with publisher for hardcopy trade distribution and with SRGM Education Department for website presence.

 

TRANSLATION AND RESEARCH

  • Translation of research materials; translation of institutional correspondence, as needed.

 

REPRESENTATION AND CULTIVATION

  • Represent the Asian art curatorial team at public and private functions, including arranging Guggenheim tours for visiting foreign dignitaries and VIPS.
  • Participate in ongoing development and cultivation events in New York.
  • Assist in programming donor travel to China and other Asian countries including Museum Trustees, donor, patrons, and Directors Office requests.

 

ADMINISTRATION

  • Manage travel, expense reports, and scheduling as needed for Asian art curators.
  • Manage Curatorial, Asian Art budget with Director of Curatorial Affairs.
  • Oversee Curatorial, Asian Art intern program.
  • Maintain Asian art research libraries in curatorial offices.
  • Support curators’ PowerPoint presentations for lectures and internal meetings as needed.
  • Support exhibition and project fundraising proposal needs.

 

Job Requirements

  • Masters degree in modern art history with demonstrated interest in modern and contemporary Asian art.
  • 2 to 4 years’ experience in a curatorial department preferred.
  • Graduate-level fluency, both written and spoken, in at least one East Asian language is mandatory
  • Excellent English language oral and written communication skills.
  • Professional demeanor and diplomatic approach.
  • Ability to successfully interact with a wide variety of internal and external individuals.
  • Experience in scholarly research and writing.
  • Knowledge of computer databases and MS Office.
  • TMS experience a plus.
