Job Description

The Massillon Museum seeks a part-time Registrar responsible for receipt, documentation, cataloguing, data entry, and storage of incoming donations to the collection; facilitating of incoming and outgoing loans; preparation of objects for storage; and assisting the Curator and Archivist with maintenance of storage equipment/archival supplies, including exhibition props and associated materials.  The Registrar will assist the Archivist and Curator with exhibition development and research; regularly inventory collections and make recommendations for conservation; maintain donor files; and make packing and shipping arrangements.

The Registrar is expected to develop a thorough understanding of the collections database and must keep abreast of new developments in registration methods and collections management software.  The Registrar must attend Collections Committee meetings as requested; process all photograph reproduction and research requests in collaboration with the Curator and Archivist; and work with the Curator to monitor the environment of the collections storage facility and exhibit galleries.  For collections storage projects, the Registrar will play a vital role in documenting, housing and inventorying the collections.

 

Job Requirements

 This position requires collaboration with others and the ability to function well as a member of a team, but also able to work independently.  Excellent organizational, clerical and communication skills – both verbal and written – are important, as are strong people skills.  Proficiency in MS Word is required. Additional skills in Excel, Outlook, Adobe Photoshop, and PastPerfect are preferred.

Applicants with degrees in art history, history, museum studies or related museum experience will be considered.  Candidates must demonstrate a proven ability in database entry and museum infrastructure; evidence of scholarly research and writing; ability to interpret collections and communicate knowledge relevant to collections; and basic knowledge of the techniques of selection, evaluation, preservation, restoration and exhibition of objects.
