The Minneapolis Institute of Arts seeks a dynamic and experienced Curator with expertise in 20th- and 21st-century art, particularly art made after 1970.  Because the museum’s Department of Contemporary Art was only recently founded (2008), the position is a formative one, offering the opportunity to have a major impact on the museum and the community.

  • conduct and support research on and publication of the collection.

  • cultivate relationships with donors, professional colleagues, partner organizations and the community in furtherance of the MIA’s strategic goals.
  • work in close collaboration with other curatorial departments whenever appropriate.
  • work closely with collectors and prospective donors.
  • supervise the coordinator of the Minnesota Artists Exhibition Program (MAEP), an artist-run exhibition program featuring the works of regional artists as selected by a panel of their peers.

  • Master’s degree (Ph.D. preferred).
  • Minimum of five years of curatorial experience in contemporary art.
  • Strong record of research and scholarship, with proven experience organizing loan exhibitions and producing publications of high quality.
  • Demonstrated skill at strategically building a collection through gifts and purchases.
  • Team player with proven ability to work effectively and positively with staff, trustees, and all other internal and external contacts.
  • Ability to build positive and effective relationships with donors and the broader community.
