The Head of Publications and Digital Media directs the planning, preparation, production, and publication of catalogues and printed and electronic materials relating to the Museum’s exhibitions, collections, and education programs (including label copy and didactic texts). This person supervises a staff that manage the Museum’s photographic rights and reproductions as well as publication and editorial initiatives. S/he contributes to museum-wide planning processes and a variety of initiatives that achieve the museum’s strategic objectives. This individual is responsible for providing substantive editing (including manuscript preparation and content/structural review), copy editing, and proofreading of art content for the Museum’s printed materials, in-gallery communications, website, microsites, and Apps.

The Head works closely with Museum colleagues to assess goals and requirements of all publications projects; establishes budgets and schedules; and monitors and coordinates progress from concept through writing and production phases. Identifies and directs independent contractors and vendors, including designers, printers, photographers, editors, copyeditors, writers, and translators to ensure that books and other printed and electronic materials meet the Museum’s scholarly aesthetic standards and production/delivery schedules within budget parameters. Actively sources and initiates discussions with co-publishers and distributors for Museum catalogues, and represents the Museum nationally and internationally in such endeavors. Oversees contracted photography, in-house imaging, rights and reproductions, and licensing activities.

Job Requirements

Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree strongly preferred, ideally in art, art history, or a related field. Strong editorial skills, proven ability to plan schedules, to meet deadlines, and to manage budgets. Minimum of five years experience in editing and overseeing the production of art publications, along with the ability to motivate and supervise staff.  Highly developed aesthetic sensibilities as well as superior communication, interpersonal skills, and organization. Knowledge of relevant intellectual property issues. Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs, including Word, Excel, Outlook; along with electronic editing using pdfs. Eventual proficiency with TMS, the Museum’s Collection management database. Familiarity with Photoshop, InDesign, and experience in digital publications and generating art content online Reading knowledge of French and/or German desirable.
