The Town of Silver City is accepting applications for the position of Curator of Education (full-time/exempt) for the Silver City Museum. Responsible for the planning, development, coordination and execution of a monthly schedule of museum educational programs and engaging museum activities for pre-school through adults. SPECIFIC CERTIFICATION AND/OR LICENSE REQUIREMENTS:

NM Class D Driver’s License or ability to obtain within 30 days

EDUCATION-MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Minimum of BA in Education, Museum Studies, History, Communications, Parks and Recreation or other related field.

EXPERIENCE-MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:  Two years minimum experience working in a museum environment, parks or other public education or program interpretation field preferred, or demonstrated experience working closely with school groups, adult learners, or public outreach. Demonstrated knowledge of state curriculum standards; demonstrated capacity to work in a collaborative environment, preferably with teachers or other community outreach professionals. Experience working with small museums and knowledge of New Mexico history is helpful.

ABILITIES-MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:  Demonstrated leadership and management abilities, along with communication, collaboration, and team-building skills. Ability to work effectively within complex organizations while demonstrating the ability to communicate with various age groups in a public setting. Excellent written, verbal and communication skills, as well as demonstrated efficiency and time- management awareness. Must have proficient computer skills with ability to work with basic software applications; must be able to operate basic office machinery and some basic exhibit production equipment. Ability to pass drug and alcohol tests.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Responsible for the coordination, facilitation and delivery of a variety of museum programs including adult and student tours, guest speaker lecture series, children and adult hands-on activities, workshops, special events, and limited outreach engagements with other community groups.

Develops and maintains relations both formally and informally with area educators and other advisory teams to ensure school and community programming needs and interests are included within museum programming.  Develops collaborative efforts with other community groups in the presentation of programming and activities at the museum.

Responsible for writing, editing and distribution of press releases, calendar of events, and other public media related to activities and programs offered at the museum.   Coordinates staff articles for inclusion within a monthly newsletter.

Works closely with museum exhibits team in the development and inclusion of fun and engaging museum hands-on activities for guests of all ages and varying group size; development of exhibit text for general and specific age groups; and provides assistance as needed with exhibit prep, installation and de-installation.

Supervises and works with the Volunteer Coordinator in the training and facilitation of volunteers for public guest services and educational programming.

Provides coverage as needed for other guest experience museum operations.

Serves as the CLG (Certified Local Government) Coordinator for the Town of Silver City. Seeks potential grant or funding opportunities for the museum in developing museum educational programs and activities related to the celebration and preservation of southwest New Mexico history.

Works with the museum director on budget preparation for all educational activities at the Museum and with projects that entail collaboration with other community groups and individuals.

Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the museum director.

WORKING CONDITIONS:  Office and museum environs including outside activity programming.  May require operation of hand and power tools, climbing ladders, and basic construction of program activity components for inclusion with exhibits and other programming.  Weekends and after-hours schedule adjustments may be required.  Some travel required.
