Job Description

The Director of Education is responsible for leadership of the Museum’s informal educational program development and implementation aligned with the institution’s strategic plan and operational goals. Under the direction of the Senior Vice President, Public Programs direct responsibilities include management of staff, financial and operational aspects of the department to produce programs in the areas of on-site daily programs, on-site school-age programs, outreach educational and public programs, and on-line/ virtual educational opportunities. As an integral part of content delivery at Bishop Museum the Director of Education also supports selection and development of travelling and in-house exhibitions to ensure educational goals are met. As the role of technology will continue to increase in its importance for delivery of educational and public programs, the Director of Education will also spearhead educational content and programs in virtual environments. In order to build external support and secure resources for programs, this position must work closely and participate directly with the institutional advancement division, senior leadership and other managers to identify and secure grant funding support and beneficial partnerships for the Museum. This person will be asked to assess the Museum’s educational programs and initiatives to develop in conjunction with senior leadership a long-range educational growth plan that aligns with the Museum’s new strategic plan. S/he must be able to work effectively with the public programs departments and the collections and research areas of the Museum to create unique, relevant, and innovative educational outcomes.
  • Directly supervises education department within the public programs division of Museum. In conjunction with these and other departments, contributes to the Museum’s annual operational plan, long range plans, and overall strategies to develop education reach and quality to advance the Museum’s mission and strengthen its financial and operational foundation.
  • Works directly with the SVP, Public Programs and other relevant departments to ensure Museum-wide integration of collections and research activities with public programs and activities.
  • Identifies and directly participates in public presentations and fundraising activities that raise the profile of the institution, works with the institutional advancement and public programs division to organize projects to generate grant funding, partnerships and earned revenue opportunities.
  • Develops and implements policies and procedures, evaluative/measurement tools that will ensure conformance to museum standards and operational efficiency that meets best practices for the Museum.
  • Manages current education-related grants including federal agencies (NSF, NOAA, NASA, US Department of Education and others), State of Hawai‘i, and national and local private foundations. Serve as PI (Principal Investigator) on education-related grants
  • Develops partnerships with external agencies, organizations, and community groups aligned with the museum’s strategic goals to advance Museum educational and public programs.
  • Manage the content aspects of the docent programs in Hawaiian Hall, Science Adventure Center, Traveling Exhibit Hall and other areas of Museum.
  • Works with and mentors other Museum staff to develop new programs, projects, services and products, providing advice on feasibility, impact and success. Encourages staff professionalism and academic excellence, promotes teamwork and uses resources and creativity to develop solutions to Museum issues, concerns and opportunities.
  • Represent the Museum and its education programs at professional conferences, including
  • teacher conferences, special events, and in the media.
  • Assists the SVP, Public Programs as needed; works on other assignments/tasks as directed.

Job Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Excellent administrative skills and experience with preference to management in a museum educational setting or related organization.
  • Proven track record of educational and/ or informal learning program development and implementation in museum or related public environment.
  • Excellent communication and presentations skills with preference to experience in public presentations and background.
  • Ability to obtain significant levels of grant funding, and develop collaborations and community partnerships to extend and enhance program reach and quality.
Education
  • Advanced degree in education or related field required. Ph. D. or Education Doctorate preferred.
Skills
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and manage a department and staff with limited budgets to achieve organizational goals.
  • Ability to interact with people at all levels.
  • Ability to work well on multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously.
  • Computer-literate with proficiency required in word processing, databases, spreadsheets, and desktop publishing.
  • Flexibility in working hours, as some evening and weekend work is required.
  • Must have own car with proof of insurance.
