Position Description:  The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Department of Art & Design is searching for a probationary  Academic Curator for a nine-month appointment with an additional one-month summer salary.  The Art & Design program is well established and NASAD accredited.  The primary responsibilities will be:  1)  direct the gallery  programs, 2)  select, supervise, train, and evaluate student gallery staff, 3) teach one to two courses per academic year in her/his area of expertise, and 4) curate and maintain the University’s permanent collection.

As Academic Curator the candidate will be responsible for developing new exhibitions from initial concept to final installation.  This includes curatorial research, exhibition design, layout, installation, publicity, preparation of educational material, planning events and lectures, budget management, collection care and management, grant writing, and training student interns in gallery management.

As academic staff, the candidate will be responsible for teaching one to two courses per academic year in his/her area of expertise.

Department/University Description:  The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point enrolls over 9000 students, predominantly in undergraduate programs within colleges of letters and science, natural resources, professional studies, and fine arts & communication.  The well-landscaped campus, located 110 miles north of Madison, includes a 200 acre nature preserve.  The College of Fine Arts & Communication includes Art & Design, Communication, Music, Theatre & Dance and the Aber Suzuki Program.

The Department of Art & Design currently has 280 majors, 14 ranked full time faculty members and many additional staff members. Art & Design majors pursue either BA degrees in Art History or Studio Arts or BFA degrees in Art with an emphasis in 2D, 3D or Graphic Design. The key gallery space is the Carlsten Gallery, a 2,000 square foot facility within the Noel Fine Arts Center; this is the major art gallery at the University and serves both the University and the Stevens Point community.  The gallery program operates throughout the academic year, featuring juried shows and exhibitions of leading artists, faculty and the BFA students and maintaining an effective permanent collection program.  Student workers are available to assist in gallery operation.

Appointment Date:  August, 2015

Terms of Employment:  Academic Curator, probationary academic staff.  Full-time nine months, with an additional one-month summer salary.

Job Requirements

Required Qualifications:  MFA in Studio Art or Design/MA in Art History or Museum Studies.  Gallery/Museum experience and an active record of professional accomplishment required.   The candidate must have strong communication skills, grant writing experience, and the ability to work effectively with a variety of constituents.

Preferred Qualifications:  University teaching experience is preferred and demonstrates experience addressing contemporary issues in the visual arts and design.
