The Museum of Modern Art is currently accepting applications for a Production Manager in its’ Exhibition Design and Production Department to lead the planning and implementation process for the production of all temporary exhibitions and collection gallery rotations in the Museum.

Working with the director, Exhibition Design and Production, s/he develops the master exhibitions calendar in tandem with exhibition scopes and budgets for 125,000 square feet of gallery space. S/he manages the in-house carpentry shop, frame shop, mechanics, and painters. Working closely with the ED&P staff of exhibition designers and assistant production managers, and cross-departmentally with curatorial, Registrar, Conservation, AV, Digital Media, and Graphic Design, s/he advises on methods of production and coordinates the construction/installation activities of multiple sites to deliver exhibitions on time and within budget. Working closely with Facilities, Special Events, Education, Retail, and Graphic Design, s/he also coordinates exhibition/installation activities throughout the Museum.

Additional responsibilities are as follows:

Reviews design proposals and construction documents for alignment of scope and budget within the overall exhibition program.

Tracks, manages and communicates staffing, schedule, phasing, budgets, approvals, and scope shifts.

Working closely with Facilities, ensures best building practices and coordination with building systems and operations.

Plans and manages the production schedule of all design elements, fabrication, and installation needs for exhibitions.

Occasionally working with outside designers, architects, and contractors, project-manages construction of public space and/or exhibition-related projects.

Leads the department in the research and investigation of materials and construction technologies.

Job Requirements

Qualified candidates will possess a Bachelor’s degree in art or a design related field, and five to seven years progressively responsible experience in construction management, industrial shop management, exhibition design, architecture, industrial design, or equivalent. Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail. Ability to efficiently manage building crews and several projects simultaneously at various phases. Ability to form and maintain successful working relationships with museum staff, designers, and artists. Proficiency in AutoCAD, Photoshop, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and other standard office procedures and equipment. Knowledge of 20th- and 21st-century art preferred.  If hired, individual must successfully complete a security threat assessment through the Department of Homeland Security.
