The Andy Warhol Museum is seeking a Director of Exhibitions. This position will provide vision for, and lead the development, design, and maintenance of, all exhibitions – permanent, temporary, and traveling.

Responsible for the management and direction of all exhibition galleries. Responsible for the overall management and direction of exhibitions to provide excellent customer service and strong content interpretation. This includes development, design, prototyping, fabrication, installation, maintenance, and evaluation. Equally responsible for the upkeep of, and necessary and ongoing renovations to, existing galleries and displays in order to provide a seamless, engaging and ‘undated’ museum experience from gallery to gallery.

Job Requirements

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Bachelor’s Degree in Art History and five years’ experience working in a museum preparing, presenting, and maintaining exhibitions. Experience in word processing, databases, and the internet. Proficient typing skills. Must have extensive knowledge of museum-related legal issues, contract negotiations and budgeting. Must be able to work on many projects simultaneously.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Possess a commitment to the care and safe handling of works of art. Highly organized. Excellent interpersonal communication skills and be able to work with a diverse group of constituents. Experience in exhibition installation, exhibition design, and building standards preferred. Experience in Gallery Systems collection database and Sketchup preferred. International and domestic travel required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Use of hand and power tools of varying size and complexity. Must be able to climb and work on ladders for extended periods of time, reach, stretch, and stoop, work with hands above shoulder level, lift heavy objects (50 pounds), and stand or walk for long periods of time.

DIRECT REPORTS: Supervise Exhibition Coordinator and Art Handlers.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES

1. Work with Director, Curators, Registrars, Marketing, Development, Education and
Administration to organize and facilitate the planning and execution of exhibitions.

2. Draft and negotiate exhibition contracts and act as contract liaison between other museums, corporations, and governments. Review contracts frequently with the CMP lawyer.

3. Maintain numerous exhibition and loan budgets to be reviewed with the Director of Finance. Oversee Film and Video and Archives exhibition and loan budgets. Periodically forecast and update all exhibition and loan budgets.

4. Develop plans and policies for exhibition and loan program for the curatorial team.

5. Design and frequently update plans for all permanent collection galleries and temporary exhibition spaces in Sketchup, in consultation with the Curator.

6. Organize and maintain exhibition installation schedules and maintain production timelines.

7. Work with external museums and/or governments related to traveling and in-house exhibitions – correspond with curators and registrars, prepare and send exhibition materials, checklists, exhibition specifications (plans, space and construction requirements, etc.), images, catalogs, insurance values, etc., and create and maintain schedules relating to maintenance of traveling exhibitions.

8. Oversee installation, construction, and maintenance activities in the Museum’s galleries.

9. Lead weekly exhibition and loan planning meetings with staff. Provide general updated information on status of current and upcoming in-house and traveling exhibitions, field questions relating to all Warhol exhibitions.

10. Update Basecamp schedule for exhibitions and loans – create detailed schedules for each exhibition and frequently update the schedule with packing and shipping dates.

11. Prepare a work schedule and exercise general supervision over exhibition coordinator and art handling staff.

12. Advise the Exhibition Coordinator, Art Handlers, Conservators, and Registrars on implementation of the work schedule.

13. Maintain and distribute monthly exhibition and loan schedules detailing all pertinent information relating to Warhol Museum exhibitions and loans.

14. Approve, process, and file electronically all invoices, wire transfers, and check requests relating to exhibitions and loans.

15. Receive copies of all correspondence relating to exhibitions and loans. Maintain comprehensive files pertaining to all exhibitions.

16. Prepare invoice and payment schedules and correspond with venues to ensure payment deadlines are met and proper accounts are credited.

17. Create and maintain lists of courier, curatorial, and archivist expenses for traveling exhibitions.

18. Provide physical and curatorial assistance to other departments relating to exhibitions.

19. Work with Registrars to organize local pickups and deliveries of works of art and coordinate the packing and unpacking of exhibitions and loans.

20. Maintain a high awareness of preservation and conservation issues in the handling and storage of works of art.

21. Oversee the unpacking and installation of artworks in major exhibitions at other venues. Manage and supervise teams of international art handlers with little art handling experience.

22. Act as courier both domestically and internationally.

23. Obtain attendance reports from venues with exhibitions or loans for which the Warhol Museum is associated.

24. Participate in planning meetings; provide general updated information on status of current and upcoming in-house and traveling exhibitions, field questions relating to all Warhol exhibitions.
