DESCRIPTION and SCOPE: Museum of History & Industry (MOHAI) is seeking a Director of Curatorial Services to serve as the chief of curatorial and interpretive programs, responsible for the development and execution of an integrated strategy for MOHAI collections, exhibits, and public and education programs. The Director will be responsible for the coordinated growth of these areas as MOHAI expands operations in its new home, and will be the lead staff responsible for the coordination of the museum’s content, programming and collections initiatives. A special responsibility will be to serve as the lead curator for the Bezos Center for Innovation. To accomplish these duties, the Director will oversee a staff that currently numbers 20 museum professionals in exhibits, collections, library, public programs, and education, with supervisory responsibilities for six managers.

The Director of Curatorial Services is a newly established position at MOHAI. The Director will report to the Executive Director and will serve with the Executive Director, Director of Finance & Administrative Services, Director of Marketing & Communications, Director of Development, and Executive Assistant to form the executive management team for MOHAI.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

LEAD DUTIES:

Lead Curatorial Planning: Working with department personnel and museum leadership, leads the development and implementation of an integrated curatorial and interpretive plan for the museum’s exhibits, collections, and education and public programs, including the Bezos Center for Innovation.
Management: Lead management of a team of 20 museum professionals in the areas of exhibits, programs, education, and collections at two sites (Lake Union and Georgetown), including six direct managerial reports (see below).
Executive Team: Serves as a member of the executive management team, and works collaboratively with the Executive Director, Director of Finance and Operations, Director of Development, Director of Marketing and Communications and Executive Assistant to ensure effective and coordinated implementation of museum plans.
Budgeting: Develops and manages the curatorial services operating and personnel (non-capital) budget, currently approximately $1.6 million.
Community Relations: Serves as lead spokesperson for the mission and purpose of MOHAI curatorial and interpretive programs.
OVERSIGHT DUTIES:

Collections Management: Supervise collection and library managers.
Exhibit Planning: Supervise exhibit manager.
Educational and Program Initiatives: Supervise program and education managers.

Job Requirements
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Experience: At least five years senior curatorial experience at a history museum or equivalent facility, including demonstrated success in creating and executing exhibits, managing collections, and developing public and education programs. Up to three years of hands-on experience successfully leading, managing and growing a diverse professional staff. Substantial experience in effectively managing large budgets and success in completing complex long-term projects.
Education: Master of Arts in history, museum studies or a related field with demonstrated excellent writing and communication skills.
