The Missouri History Museum is dedicated to creating engaging and accessible visitor experiences through creative and thoughtful exhibits. The Exhibitions Preparator is an important member of the teams that make that happen by working on both in-house and traveling exhibitions. The preparator works closely with Exhibitions and Research staff and cross-departmentally with the exhibitions registrar and conservator to ensure that exhibits are built and installed in a way that protects and preserves the historical collections. The next few years will be an exciting time for the Missouri History Museum. A number of new exhibits, including multiple core exhibits, are under development and promise to transform the Museum in exciting and engaging ways. The Exhibitions Preparator will be an important part of this transformation.

Duties and Responsibilities: The Exhibitions Preparator will be heavily involved in the installations and deinstalls of all exhibits and must possess the ability to efficiently manage several projects simultaneously that are at various phases of completion. The selected candidate will be expected to advise on methods of production and will coordinate with exhibit designers and the exhibits registrar on the construction and installation of exhibit elements. Heavy lifting and strenuous physical activities are an essential part of the job as is a willingness to work well with teams of people with a wide range of skills and experience. The preparator will be asked to:

• Build exhibit elements such as cleats and pedestals.

• Install and deinstall exhibit features including cases, walls, and graphics.

• Oversee install and deinstall crews that include both in-house staff and outside contractors.

• Build artifact mounts using a variety of appropriate materials.

• Mat and frame.

• Assist with packing, moving, and installing exhibit elements and artifacts.

• Manage workshop inventory.

• Purchase tools and equipment and maintain their proper storage and care.

• In conjunction with the exhibits registrar and other staff, perform walkthroughs of exhibits on the floor and complete necessary upkeep.

• Perform other duties as needed.

Job Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in History, Art, or related field.

Three or more years experience working in a museum environment.

Ability to properly handle and move delicate and valuable art and artifacts.

Ability to work from drawings and verbal instructions to build and install artifact mounts.

Skill in working with a number of different kinds of materials including lumber, metal, fabrics, plastics, mechanical fasteners, and adhesives.

Excellent verbal and communication skills.

Ability to lift 50+ pounds.
