Each year, the Trustees of Reservations invites and welcomes more than 250,000 program participants to nearly 1,000 public programs on our reservations. These public programs highlight the unique and special characteristics of our special places and encourage greater care and support of our places by creating memorable experiences, sharing knowledge, and building personal skills which can be transferred into our personal lives. Trustees programs cover a range of topics including ecology, culture and history, science, health and wellness, agriculture and food, and outdoor activities. The Director of Public Programming will facilitate new strategies for programming which will attract new audiences to the Trustees’ mission; define and translate organizational priorities; and create systems and protocols which will enhance and uplift the Trustees programming work.

About the Position:

The Director of Public Programming reports to the Chief Marketing Officer and is part of the Audience Engagement team. The Director of Public Programming works closely with the four Regional Engagement Managers, Director of Visitor Interpretation, Volunteer Program Services Manager, Director of Membership Acquisitions, Regional Visitor Services and Membership Services staff, Director of Marketing and Communications, and Regional Directors. The Director of Public Programming will also work with outside vendors, consultants, and community organizations. The position requires approximately 50% travel across the state of Massachusetts in employee’s own car (The Trustees will reimburse for mileage expenses).

Key Responsibilities:

The Trustees has recently completed an Engagement Strategy planning process which includes a system for using audience research to design and produce public programs. This position will serve as the primary administrator for overseeing and creating public programming at The Trustees’ reservations. The Director will provide strategic direction to enhancing, maintaining, and improving the more than 900 public programs presented annually at our sites, especially those with high visitor interaction with staff, enterprise, engagement, programming, and fees. The Director of Public Programming will be responsible for creating, overseeing, and implementing a central strategy and reporting systems for program participation, as well as a training module which supports and encourages superior customer service at all public events for the Trustees.

Essential Functions:

  • Create and communicate all standards, protocols, and evaluation systems for public programs.
  • Oversee the administration and management of the program registration system and functions of the Trustees.
  • Provide guidance to staff around the Commonwealth who are producing and presenting programs and events.
  • Develop a system for reporting of all programming metrics including ticketing, membership conversion, and revenue.
  • Work with Finance and Membership to ensure best practices of data management.
  • Apply a rigorous fiscal discipline to cost/benefit analysis.
  • Produce and present regular reports and dashboards for the CMO and President.
  • Work with the Chief Marketing Officer and regional staff to conceive and develop an infrastructure for evaluating and improving all programs.
  • Work with regional staff to establish revenue and membership goals for all programs.
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will be self-motivated, reliable, and flexible.

Additional qualifications include:

  • 7+ years of progressively responsible experience in audience development, public programming, and program production.
  • Bachelor’s degree in related fields.
  • Proven track record of conceiving, managing, and implementing multi-faceted visitor services functions.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage many deadlines, projects, and relationships.
  • Familiarity and understanding of visitor services procedures and best practices.
  • Technical experience with relational databases and reporting tools. Familiarity with Convio and Blackbaud Raisers Edge a plus.
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office software applications.
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to manage relationships across geographic distances.
  • Strong analytic and organizational skills; ability to manage projects and workflow, using time and resources effectively.
  • High regard for customer service and visitor experience.

Compensation & Benefits:

This is a full-time, exempt position located at either our administrative office in Boston, MA or the Marketing and Communications Office at Moose Hill Farm in Sharon, MA. Starting salary is commensurate with experience.
