The Fabric Workshop and Museum (FWM) seeks a highly-experienced Registrar to oversee the care and management of a 6,000+ object permanent collection of diverse, contemporary art housed in the museum and off-site storage, as well as an impressive photography/media collection. This collection represents 38 years of visual media works created by over 800 acclaimed contemporary artists. The Fabric Workshop and Museum maintains six galleries within three buildings with a total of 10,448 square feet, and hosts an average of 13 shows a year.  The Registrar will report to FWM’s Artistic Director and the Head of Exhibitions & Publications.

Specific Responsibilities:

Permanent Collection:

  • Oversee the accessioning, condition of, and location of objects in the Museum’s permanent collection, including the movement, packing, and shipping of said objects;
  • Periodically review and evaluate registration and catalog system to maintain applicability, consistency, and operation;
  • Prepare acquisition reports for review of curatorial and administrative staff, as well as reporting to FWM’s Board of Directors on upcoming loans or possible accessions to the Museum’s collection during board meetings.

Loans and Installation:

  • Oversee handling and inspection of all objects entering or leaving the Museum, including traveling exhibits, and confer with other personnel to develop and initiate most practical methods of packing and shipping fragile or valuable objects;
  • Process condition reports and all other paperwork for incoming and outgoing loan requests, as well as suggesting and scheduling any artwork conservation as deemed necessary;
  • Supervise installation/deinstallation of artworks.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor of Arts, Masters in art history or museum studies preferred.
  • Must have demonstrable experience with all aspects of permanent collections stewardship, conservation, and major international loans and exhibitions including contracts, budgets, insurance, transportation, governmental regulations, customs regulations, security procedures and U.S. Government indemnification program.
  • Knowledge of EmBARK or comparative collections management software program is essential.
  • Ability to do heavy-lifting is required.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills are required as well as a keen sense of diplomacy, optimizing effective interaction with a broad range of individuals, both within the institution as well as with outside professionals.
