DeCordova Sculpture Park and Museum seeks a strategic leader for the position of Director of Finance. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Finance is an essential member of the senior leadership team charged with exceptional financial decision making to help guide the institution through a period of organizational growth.

The Director of Finance provides the Museum Director and the Museum’s Board of Trustees with accurate and timely financial data necessary for budgetary and financial decisions. S/he is responsible for the efficient and timely performance of all accounting and financial processes to manage the financial infrastructure of the organization.

The Director of Finance ensures Museum compliance with all applicable financial and legal standards by utilizing and implementing best practices; reports to the Director and is a part of the senior management team; and assists and advises managers and staff about Finance issues at deCordova while providing a high standard of internal customer service. This position manages a staff of two.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain timely and accurate financial statements and reports in accordance to generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
  • Maintain financial objectives and policies, reporting any variances to the Director and Finance Committee.
  • Manage and lead an effective finance team, ensuring staff are successfully supervised and supported in their work. Develop staff and provide coaching to ensure high-quality work output.
  • Ensure routine accounting needs are met on time with adequate separation of responsibilities throughout team for good control:
  • Process revenues from multiple operational sources
  • Enter revenues and prepare timely deposits
  • Process accounts payable
  • Process bi-weekly payroll including tracking time off accruals/usage
  • Make general ledger entries
  • Reconcile all cash and balance sheet accounts monthly
  • Complete monthly close checklist in a timely manner
  • Monitor cash flow for smooth operations, including aging payables etc.
  • Record Fixed Assets and depreciation
  • Maintain accounting for Campaigns, Endowments and other restricted net assets and related investments
  • Regularly consult with department heads on budget variances and trends
  • Execute preparation for annual Audit and related filings, ensuring efficient and complete provision of all support documentation to complete Audit and filings in a timely manner. Provide reconciliation between audited statements and internal financial documents.
  • In conjunction with the Director and/or Finance Committee, maintain a positive working relationship with bonding authorities, financial institutions, and banks. Maintain Compliance Certification, and Line of Credit transactions.
  • Assist the Director with the preparation of the Annual Budget by department heads and through reviews by the Director and Finance Committee, before final approval by the Board in April. Monitor performance against budget throughout the year, updating the outlook for the total year as needed.
  • Distribute monthly statements against budget to department heads in a timely manner and consult each about variances. Provide department heads with tools and information to assist in the oversight of their budgets.
  • Prepare timely cash flow projections, accurate monthly statements against budget, and other reports as required for Finance Committee meetings and internal management use.
  • Ensure accurate and complete notes of Finance and Audit meetings are taken and distributed.
  • Advise Director and/or Finance Committee on desirable operational adjustments to improve results, efficiency, and controls.
  • Develop beneficial working relationships with members of the Finance committee and Board leadership. Solicits feedback and input, and communicates goals and progress in a manner that builds long-term confidence in the Finance office.
  • Manage payroll processing.
  • Manage tracking of time off accrual, requests, and usage.
  • Under the oversight of the HR Director, initiates 403b compliance testing with outside consultant and reports results back to HR for action.
  • Holds responsibility for the administration of all areas of operational insurance coverage, coordinating with relevant staff as necessary. Manages policy renewals, evaluates coverage and limits, manages claims, evaluates risks, and manages premium audits. Ensures the institution maintains adequate and cost-effective coverage of risk.
  • Work closely and collaboratively with the Director of HR to ensure s/he is appropriately apprised of Finance needs relating to benefits and HR administration, recording, and payroll timing.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field. Master’s degree and/or CPA or equivalent certification desirable.
  • 5 or more years finance and accounting experience with progressive managerial responsibility, preferably in a nonprofit cultural or arts organization.
  • Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and nonprofit accounting practices.
  • 3 or more years of direct staff supervision.
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Comfort and confidence in communicating fiscal policies and best practices to all levels of the organization.
  • Experience working with payroll software preferred.
  • Excellent financial analysis, analytical thinking and project management skills.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Must have high level of professionalism and ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Commitment to excellence, detail oriented and precise
  • Self-starter, creative problem solver, results oriented individual.

This position is full-time, salaried, exempt and benefits eligible.
